Paul A. Supowitz has served as Vice Chancellor for Community and Governmental Relations at the University of Pittsburgh since 2006, overseeing the University’s interactions with all levels of government – federal, state and local, as well as with community organizations in the region. The Office of Community and Governmental Relations has also led the implementation of Pitt’s Community Engagement Centers.

Mr. Supowitz joined the University’s Community and Governmental Relations office as the Associate Vice Chancellor for Commonwealth, City and County Relations in February 2002. He also continued his previous University role as Associate General Counsel with responsibility for legal matters relating to community and governmental relations as well as environmental, health and safety. From 2000 until 2013, Mr. Supowitz provided administrative supervision for the University’s Department of Environmental Health and Safety. Prior to joining Community and Governmental Relations, his areas of responsibility in the Office of General Counsel included international programs, copyright, software and database licensing, student affairs and computer issues. Mr. Supowitz serves on the University’s Environmental Health and Safety Committee, Plant Utilization and Planning Committee, the Commonwealth and Community Relations Committees and previously served as Vice Chair of the University’s Radiation Safety Committee and as a member of the UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside Community Relations Committee. He is also Chair of the Oakland Task Force.

Prior to joining the University, Mr. Supowitz was an Associate in the Pittsburgh law firm of Klett Rooney Lieber & Schorling, where his practice focused on environmental law and litigation. He represented parties before state and federal courts, the Pennsylvania Environmental Hearing Board, the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, and counseled clients in a wide variety of environmental compliance and remediation related matters.

Mr. Supowitz earned his B.S. degree in Public Affairs with a concentration in Environmental Science from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. He earned his law degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, cum laude. He is a member of the Allegheny County Bar Association Professional Ethics Committee, a past Chair of the ACBA Environmental Law Section, and board member of the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, Oakland Business Improvement District, 3 Rivers Wet Weather and Hebrew Free Loan.
