Finance Manager
Society for College and University Planning
Ann Arbor, MIBeth Smith is the finance manager at the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP). She manages accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting. She reviews and ensures completion and accuracy of all financial transactions, and works with SCUP staff and board members to research and provide comprehensive financial analysis to aid in decision-making (e.g., operating ratios, trends, KPIs, etc.). By maintaining accurate financial records and supporting staff and board members with financial reports, she helps SCUP to achieve its budgetary and fiscal goals, which moves the organization toward meeting its mission, vision, and values.
Smith’s love of math and numbers from an early age led her to the field of accounting, a line of work she’s been in for the last 30+ years. Her background includes experience in the banking industry, city treasury services, manufacturing, community colleges, and part-time small business accounting. She is often referred to as “the numbers lady”–a title that she wears proudly.
She was born and raised in the Metro Detroit area of Westland/Livonia, and she continues to reside in Livonia. Smith is married with four grown children, two grandsons, and one grandson on the way. She hopes for many more grandchildren to fill her heart and keep her young! Her life is very full outside of work with family, friends, traveling, and reading–lots of reading.
