The Speakers at the SCUP Southeast One-Day Regional Conference, Planning for Research, will help you understand what it takes.

Planning for Research
- You Need a Strategic Plan

William B. Deal, Dean of the School of Medicine at the University of Alabama, Birmingham will share the experiences of the University of Alabama as it planned for a new, state of the art School of Medicine.

-You Need Star Faculty
Harry Dailey, Director of the University of Georgia's Biomedical and Health Sciences Institute will share his experience in recruiting top faculty for the new Coverdell Center for Biomedical and Health Sciences at UGA.

-You Need Space
Thomas B. Higerd of the University of South Carolina and Catherine E. Watt of Clemson University will discuss assessing institutional return on investment of research space. They will demonstrate an interactive, web-based Space Management System that assists Deans and Department Chairs in assigning research space, assists senior administrators in convincing Boards to approve construction of new research facilities and aligns maintenance expenditures with indirect costs.

-You Need Funding
Jerry D. Percifield, O'Neal, Arcitects and Engineers will discuss leveraging NIH grant funding to program and design new facilities that support designated research acitivites.

-You Need Public/Private Partnerships
Susan Shows, Associate Director of the Georgia Research Alliance is our luncheon speaker. Shows will discuss the role of the Georgia Research Alliance as a catalyst in forming public/private partnerships of business, university research and state governments to fuel economic growth and job development in Georgia.

-Then What?
Margaret Wagner Dahl, Director of Resource Development and Technology 'Alliances at the University of Georgia will discuss research activities that generate spin-off, incubator enterprises and how research institutions support and encourage these new business models.
