Campus Heritage and Preservation

Heritage and preservation planning considers how the grounds and facilities that are part of a campus’ history will continue to contribute to the sense of place and the learning environment for students. Increasingly, buildings that were built for a hundred years are not simply candidates for razing due to aging mechanical systems. Sustainable practices encourage the reuse of materials and the renovation of facilities as ways to lower the ecological footprint of a campus. Preservation of buildings, unfortunately, can be seen as having extra issues, such as legal status and advocacy attached to it. These can make heritage and preservation efforts appear to be more costly at first look. Planners need to assess a variety of costs and potential funding mechanisms to help a campus better understand the costs and benefits of ensuring that the historic sites are including in any campus/master planning efforts.

Campus Heritage Knowledge Community connects more than 300 professionals interested in campus heritage preservation, using a state-of-the-art, Lyris-based email list.

Campus Heritage: An Appreciation of the History and Traditions of College and University Architecture by Richard P. Dober describes and illustrates the contributions campus heritage can make to promote, strengthen, and support institutional goals and objectives and outlines suggested methods of incorporating campus heritage in campus plans, facility plans, and campus design concepts. – Here’s an audio slide show by Lawrence Biemiller about this SCUP book - http://chronicle.com/media/ flash/v53/i40/oldmain

Old Main: Fame, Fate, and Contributions to Campus Planning and Design by Richard P. Dober describes the forms, fame, and fate of Old Main, arguably higher education's iconic architecture. The accompanying graphics, including a visually delightful collection of historic picture post cards, help support the premise that a rounded view of America's collegiate enterprises would be incomplete without understanding and acknowledging the contributions these magnificent masterworks have made to campus development.

Other, related books published by SCUP include Campus Planning and Campus Design.

In October 2007, SCUPs Pacific Region held a well-attended one-day symposium at Portland Community College in Oregon, titled "Renovation or Replacement? The Dilemma of Mid–Century Campus Buildings." You can locate a PDF of that event’s final program here.

The best resource for information about specific campus heritage buildings, plans, and landscapes among the 750 member organizations of the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) is its comprehensive Historic Campus Architcture Project Website.

The Getty Grant Foundation had a program in place from 2002 through 2007 which awarded nearly $14M in support of campus heritage preservation in a series of about 90 grants, most to about 85 campuses. SCUP has located the following, resulting reports and campus heritage plans, and placed them in a single blog for your reference:

Forthcoming SCUP Events

SCUP’s annual, international conference and idea marketplace is of much broader scope than campus heritage preservation, but the campus– and company–based professionals it draws make it likely to be the largest annual gathering of individuals with an interest in campus heritage preservation.

The next such event is in Portland on July 18–22, SCUP—44: Values and Vision Create the Future

The online archives of previous events contain many abstracts of campus heritage–related presentations.
SCUP—43: Discover! Global Perspectives, Local Strategies
