(PC-01) Town Gown—Regeneration through Communication
Presenters: Jen Johnson Fabrick, University Architect, Emory University
Emory University is nestled amidst high value residential areas, the CDC, and vehicular arteries for both cars and trains. Growth is the central issue which at one time alienated the University from the residential civic organizations. It has taken 10 years to fix this relationship, sometimes tenuous, with Emory still in a growth mode. The audience will learn how communications, patience, Emory sponsored organizations (the Clifton Corridor Partnership and the Friends of Emory Forest), and an effort to establish streetscape design guidelines for all roads within one mile of campus has helped to "heal".
Cost: SCUP Member $95 US by 9/23/08; $120 US after 9/23/08 | Nonmember $145 US by 9/23/08; $160 US after 9/23/08. SCUP retains the right to cancel workshops that do not meet minimum enrollment

Choosing the Future: Renewal after Katrina
Presenters: Kevin Wildes, Reverend/President, Loyola University New Orleans
Faced with the challenges of rebuilding the University and the city after Katrina it was clear that restoration was not enough. When faced with dramatic change, in every aspect of life, one cannot simply look to reinvent the past. One must look to create a future, grounded in the past. The challenge has been to truly renew the University, to build on its strengths and make it stronger; to refocus its mission. The renewal of the University had to be mission driven and true to the identity of the University.
