Conference Theme

Join others in your region to discuss the problems and solutions facing college campuses today as they relate to sustainability and the University Presidents’ Climate Commitment program.

Utilizing a combination of expert presentations, demonstrations, and panel discussions, the topics will range from:

  • Sustainable Master Planning
  • Reducing our carbon footprint
  • LEED buildings
  • Developing your own renewable energy sources.

Come join your colleagues for a day of learning and sharing about "green" topics and experiences.

8:45AM – 8:55AM
Your Mid-Atlantic Council co-hosts Michael Purcell of American University & Jack Nye of Towson University will provide an overview of the itinerary for the day long symposium on the American College & University President's Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) and campus sustainability.

8:55AM – 9:15AM
Louis W. Goodman has been professor and dean of the School of International Service since 1986 and in 1992 served as the president of the Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs. The author of numerous books and articles, Goodman's current research focuses on democracy-building and civilian control of the armed forces in Latin America. Goodman will provide a welcome to and open the symposium with an introduction and overview of the host institution, American University.

9:15AM – 10:30AM
In 2007, the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) was named one of the Top 15 Green Colleges and Universities by Grist, an online environmental magazine based in Seattle. The only state flagship university on the list that also includes schools in other countries, UMCP was lauded for student willingness to raise fees to pay for clean energy and other energy conserving measures.

Scott Lupin, director of sustainability at UMCP will provide an overview of the ACUPCC and the requirements associated with it. He will also share the UMCP experience to date and initiatives being undertaken to comply with the ACUPCC along with other sustainable initiatives on the UMCP campus.

Lupin is the director of the University of Maryland's Office of Sustainability and associate director for the Department of Environmental Safety. He has been with the university for over 11 years and has been instrumental in developing and implementing campus sustainability initiatives and environmental management efforts. As part of his responsibilities, he oversees the university's implementation of the ACUPCC. He holds a masters degree in environmental health from the University of Minnesota and has worked in the environmental field for nearly 30 years.

Sustainable Master Planning

Kevin King is a senior associate in the campus planning studio for Ayers Saint Gross, Architects and Planners in Baltimore, MD. He will be sharing a broad array of master planning strategies for advancing campus-wide sustainability initiatives and the ACUPCC. As part of his presentation he will share numerous case study examples from universities and colleges across the country.

King has developed master plans for over forty-five colleges and universities around the world ranging from large to small, public to private, and rural to urban campuses. His work experience includes sustainable campus master plans for Emory University, Arizona State University’s four campuses, Duke University, and Vedanta University which is a new start-up campus for 100,000 students in Orissa, India. He is a member of the AIA, SCUP and a LEED Accredited Professional.

Leadership Lunch

On April 21, 2008, American University joined more than 500 other universities around the United States by signing the ACUPCC(American College & University Presidents Climate Commitment). Cornelius Kerwin, president of American University will share his perspective and thoughts on the role and importance of leadership in complying with the ACUPCC and advancing campus sustainability.

Kerwin became American University's fourteenth president on September 1, 2007. He had been AU's acting, then interim, president since August 2005, and served as provost from 1997 until 2005. Kerwin is a long-standing member of the AU community. He received a BA from American University in 1971 (followed by an MA in political science from the University of Rhode Island in 1973, and a PhD in political science from Johns Hopkins University in 1978) and has been a member of the AU faculty since 1975. He has held a number of prominent leadership positions within the School of Public Affairs, including his service as dean from 1989 to 1997. Kerwin is the first alumnus to serve as President of American University.

Teleconferencing: A tool for reducing your carbon footprint

Heath Berlin of Video Communications Corporation will, through a live demonstration of teleconferencing technology, share tangible opportunities for reducing your carbon footprint and reducing your operating expenses through the use of this technology.

Overview and Application of LEED Program

Melissa Gallagher-Rogers of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) will provide an overview of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program and how it relates to the ACUPCC and campus sustainability.

Gallagher-Rogers, manager of the Government and Higher Education Sector for the US Green Building Council assists institutions of higher education in developing their green building portfolios by implementing the LEED Green Building Rating System. She is responsible for the development of tools and resources specific to providing education on green building. She began her career as a presidential management fellow (PMF) with the Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy and holds a M.P.P. in environmental policy from the University of Maryland, School of Public Policy and a BA in international environmental policy from the University of Connecticut.

A Renewable Approach to Lowering the Campus Carbon Footprint

Campus planners are grappling with making strategic decisions regarding how to allocate limited funding resources and how best to impact their carbon footprints. Paul Ormond of Haley and Aldrich will focus on the utilization of ground source geothermal energy and use multiple project examples to illustrate the potential carbon footprint reduction capability of this resource.
Ormond is a registered professional engineer with Haley Aldrich and has over 11 years experience in planning, design, and construction of institutional and commercial real estate development projects, specializing in projects located in denser urban settings having complex underground geotechnical, environmental, and regulatory issues. He is a graduate of Worcester Polytechnic Institute with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering as well as the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where he earned a master’s degree in geotechnical engineering with a heavy focus on environmental and regulatory issues.

Walking Tour of American University's Arboretum

American University was designated an arboretum and public garden in 2004. The university’s arboretum is not a separate place, set apart from daily life, it is the entire campus. Join Michael Mastrota, campus landscape architect, to wrap up the day long activities with a tour of the campus arboretum that has recently been issued the highest award for excellence in grounds management: a gold level Green Star Award from the Professional Grounds Management Society in the urban campus category.
