on Planning in
Community Colleges

The community college is increasingly significant in the world of higher education in the United States and Canada. As four-year colleges and universities are increasing their tuitions and fees, more and more students are turning to two-year institutions to meet their educational needs. The focus of community colleges on both liberal education and preparation for professions has made them a magnet for lifelong education students and businesses seeking to upgrade the skills of their workforce. Considerable anecdotal evidence also suggests that students with four-year degrees are turning to community colleges after graduation to supply certification in specific skills that lead to employment. Two-year colleges will continue to increase their enrollment into the foreseeable future, and with that growth comes increased construction and a need for the knowledge, networking, and skills that come from active participation in SCUP.

The March—May 2007 issue of Planning for Higher Education will be devoted to articles addressed specifically to the issues of importance to community colleges. We invite you to contribute manuscripts for consideration in this issue. The SCUP Community College Task Force has identified topics that hold particular interest for planners. These topics are intended as guidance only, not as a proscribed list.

  • Academic planning
  • Linking resource development and planning
  • Planning from the perspective of the president
  • Integration of academic, facilities, and information technology planning
  • Relationships with government agencies
  • Accreditation, particularly alternate self-study processes
  • Learning-centered colleges
  • Student services and student success
  • Partnerships (industry, four-year institutions, high schools, etc.)
  • Leadership transitions
  • Role of community colleges in higher education
