Valarie Avalone
Director of Planning
Monroe Community College
Valarie Avalone has over ten years of planning, management, and leadership experience in a community college setting. She has demonstrated success in developing a college–wide strategic plan, accreditation, master plan development, facilities planning and execution, space utilization, interior design, and budgeting with a strong background in project planning and management. She had the primary oversight for the building of the college’s newest residence halls and a field house (currently under construction).
Avalone has been a member of SCUP since 2000. She is a graduate of SCUP’s Planning Institute (06) and the Academy for Leadership and Development (04). She was invited to and attended the SCUP Planning Institute Retreat (07). She has a BS in Organizational Management from Roberts Wesleyan College and an MS in Adult Education from Buffalo State College. Most recently she served as an academic planning academy reviewer for SCUP—43. Additionally, she is a member of several professional organizations and has been a presenter at numerous local and national conferences including Middle States Commission on Higher Education, League for Innovation in the Community College, and the National Council for Staff, Program and Organizational Development. She is a former president of the MCC Chapter of the American Association for Women in Community Colleges. Under her leadership the chapter was recognized as the 2005 Model Chapter of the Year. In 2007 she was the recipient of the MCC Award for Excellence in Professional Service.
Phyllis Grummon
Director of Planning and Education
Society for College and University Planning
Phyllis Grummon, PhD, has been the director of planning and education at the Society for College and University Planning since June 2003. In this position she is responsible for SCUP’s Trends in Higher Education environmental scan and overseeing the design and delivery of content for SCUP’s professional development activities. She regularly contributes book reviews to Planning for Higher Education and was the guest editor for the 2007 special issue on community colleges.
Prior to jointing SCUP, Grummon worked in a variety of capacities at Michigan State University, including six years as the director of university planning. Grummon was the director of evaluation for the Institute for Public Policy and Social Research, a faculty member in the office of planning and budgets, and worked on special projects for the provost. Grummon also served as an adjunct faculty member in the colleges of Education, Business, and Social Sciences teaching organizational theory, change management, and training and career development.
Grummon served in state government as director of employability skills and director of workforce development in the Governor’s Office for Job Training. She owned and operated a management consulting firm and has over thirty years of experience in organizational development. Originally trained as a clinical and school psychologist, Grummon is an organizational psychologist who has utilized her skills in understanding people and helping them maximize their potential in all the positions she has occupied.
Grummon has published in numerous journals and books throughout her career, as well as having authored a number of assessments on workplace skills.
