SCUP Planning Institute
Step II:
Focused Knowledge for Integrated Planning Processes
Target Audiences:
Planners who have become proficient in their main area of
responsibility (academic, financial/budget, facilities) seeking to
increase their knowledge of other planning specialties, as well as how to better
integrate planning across functional areas. Individuals who have completed Step
I of the planning institute.
Session Overview:
Gain a solid grounding in the fundamental topics of academic, budget/
resources, and facilities planning in this intensive two-day workshop.
Step II includes a mix of lecture, discussion, and small-group, problem-solving
activities. The SCUP Walnut College case study is used throughout the
workshop to provide participants with active, hands-on applications of specific
planning tactics in each functional area. You will leave with a deeper
understanding of the issues related to these planning topics and how they
integrate in a higher education environment. In addition, the focused knowledge
received in Step II will prepare you for Step III.
Each functional planning area is described in detail by Step II faculty during
initial presentations. Participants from different functional areas work in
mixed groups to learn collaboratively how to integrate this knowledge in their
own planning contexts. Walnut College provides a common experience for wrestling with the issues of integration across planning disciplines. Step II
culminates with each group presenting their proposals to the new president for
how to successfully compete for funds to transform Walnut College.
During the spring of 2008, the SCUP Planning Institute is undergoing
a program review. We anticipate that the results of the review will
help us improve each of the steps. The foundations of the planning
institute will not change. As we incorporate what we've learned
through participant feedback and a review by experts, we expect that
some of the learning outcomes and content may move among the steps.
Changes will not be introduced until the fall of 2008 in Step I and
January of 2009 for Steps II and III.
