Student Housing Planning
Especially for four-year institutions, a major part of the learning experience for undergraduate students is wrapped up in their housing situation while matriculating. The integration of planning for the design, construction, renovation, programming, and policies regarding student housing are areas of interest to many SCUP members. The webcast, Trends in Campus Housing: A Critical Component When Planning Your Campus Learning Environment and Placemaking on Campuses: Creating Destinations That Build Community are available for purchase on CD. SCUP's journal, Planning for Higher Education, has published many articles on this topic over the years. A couple of recent articles are Developing a Comprehensive Housing Strategy: a Case Study and Students in My Backyard: Housing at the Campus Edge and Other Emerging Trends in Residential Development. The 2009 SCUP Portfolio, Make Way for Millennials: How Students Are Shaping Learning in Higher Education, includes 13 peer-reviewed articles and 3 book reviews from two themed issues of Planning for Higher Education. This portfolio is of special interest to planners interested in the intersection between student services, academic programming, and learning space design. Talking Stick is the official magazine of ACUHO-I (see below). Unlike ACUHO's journal, past issues of Talking Stick are available for nonmembers. Student Housing Business is new magazine which published its first issue in October 2009. Related Organizations The Association of College and University Housing Officers - International (ACUHO-I) is a professional association with a membership that includes "thousands of housing professionals from more than 900 colleges and universities in 22 different countries, who serve approximately 1.8 million students worldwide." It is, along with SCUP, a member of both the Council of Higher Education Management Associations (CHEMA) and the Higher Education Associations Sustainability Consortium (HEASC). Related associations which serve student services professionals include ACPA, College Student Educators International and NASPA, Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education.
