Campus Heritage PlanningHeritage and preservation planning considers how the grounds and facilities that are part of a campus’ history will continue to contribute to the sense of place and the learning environment for students. Increasingly, buildings that were built for a hundred years are not simply candidates for razing due to aging mechanical systems. Sustainable practices encourage the reuse of materials and the renovation of facilities as ways to lower the ecological footprint of a campus. Preservation of buildings, unfortunately, can be seen as having extra issues, such as legal status and advocacy attached to it. These can make heritage and preservation efforts appear to be more costly at first look. Planners need to assess a variety of costs and potential funding mechanisms to help a campus better understand the costs and benefits of ensuring that the historic sites are including in any campus/master planning efforts. Campus Heritage Network: Due to a grant from the Getty Foundation, SCUP has created an online community dedicated to connecting practitioners and knowledge related to campus heritage and preservation planning. That online community replaces the former resource page at this location.
