Politics of Space
Come join us for a day at the University of South Carolina where we will explore one of the hottest topics in higher education these days on the management of space on campus. This session has become a reality because it has become a major issue in the downsized economy, with student enrollments still growing, and shifting priorities for relevance and economic development needs. The influences on the decision making about space utilization is often driven by forces outside of the institution, and often by where the funding sources originate. At state institutions, the support offered by the governors and legislatures continues on a decline while demand for accountability is on the rise. Available funding, strategic plan priorities, or the political pull of a group, individual or department can drive the politics of space within the institution on campus.
We will hear from institutions in our region about what is happening on their campuses and how the decision-making process works and perhaps doesn’t work so well. Our keynote speaker will report on her extensive research in the planning process on three large institutions (who shall remain anonymous to protect the innocent) and how the most successful results were achieved when strategic planning, master planning and academic planning were all in alignment. She asked probing questions about politics’ influence and university priorities’ influence on space management, and the relationship between space management and institutional change. From this study she derived four key propositions for an effective space management plan and she will share best practices for establishment of a rational process on your campus.
Following the program, the University of South Carolina Campus Architect and others will provide a guided walking tour of recent projects on this historic campus (est. 1802) and will feature recent sustainable housing, academic and research projects in Columbia, SC. They will also show some of the planning for the next decade and projects that are in the pipeline. www.sc.edu/
