(CN001) Emerging Forces in Campus Planning | Planning for Student and Institutional Success
Presented by: Barbara S. Donerly, Assistant Director, Facilities Planning & Construction, University of South Florida-Main Campus
This session will cover the concepts USF is using to improve the campus environment for student and institutional success, including lessons learned in the 10-year USF Tampa Campus Master Plan. With current competing challenges, the judicious use of funds and campus lands are imperative. We will cover the integrated strategic campus planning issues of land use, academic and student support facilities, sustainability, pedestrian and bike travel, traffic, transit, parking, athletic and recreational facilities, student housing, safety/security, conservation, and landscape both on and off-campus. We will also briefly share a few recent projects focused on spaces designed for engaged student learning and success as a preface to the afternoon Faculty Panel discussion.

(CN002) Campus Planning: The Road Ahead

We know this truth—you don't go back to where you were. In fact, we can't. So we must take the road ahead. And as we look for guidance and to navigate from the constellations above, we remember that "space" is more than a void that exists between celestial bodies. As we face budget shortfalls and financial difficulties, we decide we need to take a class on "Creative Financing 101" instead of shrugging our shoulders and saying "Money doesn't grow on trees." This road is necessary if we want to continue to fulfill our missions and serve our students, and the speed bumps (and toads) in the road we encounter along the way will make us stronger institutions.

The TLE TeachLivE™ Lab is a mixed-reality teaching environment supporting teacher practice in pedagogy and content. The TLE TeachLivE™ Lab is an iconic example of a best practice in education, using innovative technology to provide pre-service and in-service teachers the opportunity to learn teaching skills and to craft their practice without placing "real" students at risk during the learning process. In the traditional teacher education environment real students help prospective and novice teachers become more effective educators. In a virtual teaching environment, prospective and novice teachers can make mistakes without impacting real students. In the TLE TeachLivE™ environment, prospective teachers can learn the instruction and management skills needed to become effective teachers and practicing teachers can hone and refine their skills.

Aligned with the three elements of Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK), the TLE TeachLivE™ simulator affords participants the opportunity to build content area and/or pedagogical skills with an understanding that skills will transfer to a real classroom situation. In the TLE TeachLivE™ lab, routines can be repeated with an individual instructor or a class of pre-service teachers until the routine is mastered. If novice teachers perform poorly or if experienced teachers want to experiment with a new teaching idea, using TLE TeachLivE™ poses no danger to the learning of any real student.

This environment has impacted the preparation of over 600 teachers at UCF and is now influencing teachers daily at 10 other university settings. Each of our university partners utilizes the TLE TeachLivE™ Lab in a unique manner dependent upon the needs of their students, teachers, professors, and community stakeholders. The use of TLE TeachLivE™ Lab has been instrumental in developing transition skills for students with significant disabilities, providing immediate feedback through bug-in-ear technology to pre-service teachers, developing discreet trial skills in pre-service and in-service teachers, and preparing teachers in the use of STEM-related instructional strategies.

(CN006) Case Study 1- Cradle to the Grave
Presented by: Eugene Herring, Associate Director, University of Florida
This session will discuss how the University of Florida is utilizing Building Information Modeling (BIM) to facilitate all phases of planning, design, construction, and maintenance for new facilities. This “cradle to the grave” approach has significantly improved the effectiveness of campus level site planning, conceptual building designs, budgeting, private fund raising, grant acquisitions and the entire building “life cycle” process. Furthermore, internal clients are more visually engaged in the process, and much sooner in the life of the projects, agree to critical planning and design decisions.
