Implementing the 2007 master plan, a collaborative partnership between the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), the City of Arlington, and First Baptist Church of Arlington, was formed to develop the new, $80 million, mixed-use College Park District development. The multi-use 800,000 SF program converts what were surface parking lots (less) at the northeast corner of the campus into (more) a complex of buildings that consist of parking structures, student housing and support facilities, the University Welcome Center, and retail space.

Evolving pedagogy and technology-savvy students impose transformative demands on hallowed academic spaces, such as classrooms and libraries. To serve needs with scarce resources, the University of West Georgia (UWG) has applied a model that utilizes existing space stock; incorporates cutting edge technology in selected classrooms prototypes for experiential teaching, learning, and outreach; and combines learning, discovery, social functions, and community outreach in the library. Conceptual and physical renovations that resulted in transformational experiences were achieved from developing and using champions and project advocates from IT, facilities, and academic groups. Join us as we address the process and the resulting classroom prototypes and library spaces.

Changes in the administration at Savannah State University (SSU) did not deter key leaders from completing a long overdue and comprehensive master planning process. They further embraced the opportunity to be one of six test institutions participating in an innovative and revolutionary way of assessing space use undertaken by the University System of Georgia (USG), in an effort to determine how to "use best" their facilities. SSU will present lessons learned regarding funding, capital priorities, space use, and next steps.

While most universities have a campus master plan, very few have a landscape master plan. Fewer have a cistern master plan. Learn how to think beyond a traditional campus master plan in developing holistic tools that fully integrate the ecological and human landscape into a performance landscape that transforms the campus culture and expands the academic and research opportunities across the university. The Georgia Institute of Technology's (Georgia Tech) Eco-Commons is a place where ecology and technology join to create a sustainable collegiate setting in a modern metropolis, enhancing the holistic integration of the campus framework while expanding the university’s mission.

(CN056) Not All Water Is Created Equal

Innovative use of non-potable water and production of energy will help the University of North Carolina (UNC) reach its goal to make its new Carolina North campus a model of sustainability. Harvested rainwater, cooling coil condensate, and groundwater pumped from a remediation effort at an old chemical waste site will be used for most, if not all, process purposes in the new central plant in the water-cooled chillers. The methane capture from a landfill gas system, coupled with a combined heat and power system, will result in electrical and thermal energy production and significantly lower carbon emissions compared to conventional systems. UNC's master plan for the new Carolina North campus was designed with flexibility to incorporate emerging technologies to achieve their sustainability goals over the anticipated 50-year build out. Faced with the first phase of implementation, the consultant team led a process to evaluate current options and technologies for an integrated water and energy system that moves the campus toward these goals.

The chancellor of the University System of Georgia (USG) has established improved space utilization as a top priority. In support of this initiative, we have re-evaluated all aspects of academic and support space planning. Working with six pilot institutions, we created a new overlay taxonomy that incorporates traditional Facilities Inventory and Classification Manual (FICM) codes and collects like spaces with new sensible metrics to support decision making, both for the system in capital prioritization and for institutional space management.

Facing high deferred maintenance, limited capital resources, and a need to attract students and faculty, the leadership at Clark Atlanta University had some tough decisions: tear down, build new, or invest in existing? They decided to invest in their existing facilities, infrastructure, and in bringing people together. Having completed three renovations and a central plant upgrade, this session will present the yield in terms of energy, sustainable goals, additional space, instructional seats, functional efficiency, and human capital.

The Institute of Medicine’s recommendations for integration of simulation into healthcare education and practice settings are a call for transformative action. How does an institution balance the demands on cost, time, and effort? Session leaders will provide a view of the emerging best practices in the use of simulation in healthcare, the resultant implications for design and operations of simulation centers, and report benchmarking and operational data from Post-Occupancy Evaluations and surveys of clinical simulation centers across the US.

(CN036) Thirty Buildings, Four Campuses, One Voice: Achieving Consensus at GPC

Faced with rapidly increasing enrollment and limited funding for new facilities, Georgia Perimeter College’s (GPC) president asked how many students could be taught on the college’s four campuses. Conventional utilization analyses were recast to answer that question. This capacity study helped academic, financial, and facilities officers achieve consensus about allocating the college’s capital resources. The methods developed now guide program planning for all academic buildings at GPC. These results also have increased the effectiveness of GPC’s communication with system officials.

In 2008, Clemson University’s leadership enacted the Sustainable Energy Policy, an initiative to reduce its energy consumption by 20% before 2020. In response, Clemson built a net-zero building, which will ultimately generate as much energy as it consumes, to house its design and building disciplines. The project is a profound achievement for the university and a model for higher education building design. Review the challenges and successes of this project and the innovative leadership that conceived it.

Building upon rich tradition, North Carolina Central University and its nursing department envisioned a new building to educate the next generation of skilled healthcare professionals and progress learning environments in the professional / research precinct. Unique to the selected site was the historically significant Holy Cross Catholic Church, a community icon within the historically black college and university (HBCU) campus. The project team recognized the progressive history of the nursing program and the significance of the history of the site to develop a state-of-the-art facility that respects the past.

The new, 200,000 SF James B. Hunt, Jr. Library will serve as both a central library for the North Carolina State University's Centennial Campus and a representational work space for the Institute for Emerging Issues (IEI) and chancellor’s spaces. This iconic building not only answers the need for more space, it will also serve as a highly energy efficient centerpiece and signature structure on Centennial Campus. The building is required to meet the new energy efficiency law requiring it to exceed energy-use reduction as prescribed by American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers's ASHRAE 90.1 standard by 30%.

The Oral Health Sciences building at the University of Carolina at Chapel Hill employs innovation and leadership as illustrated from three perspectives. From the academic perspective, the project directly enables the School of Dentistry to respond to the opportunities of the 21st century through dental education, research, and service. On campus, the project promotes integration within the medical precinct of the campus, and the use of innovative technologies in support of campus-wide sustainability goals. In implementation, the innovative processes and technologies employed create a facility that maximizes connectivity between existing School of Dentistry buildings to achieve a sense of community, and enhance collaboration and interaction between disciplines.

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) is no longer "landlocked"! Collaborating with the City of Greensboro and the adjacent Glenwood neighborhood, UNCG was able to expand its current campus boundaries while revitalizing an urban commercial corridor and preserving the neighborhood’s history and character. The integrated master plan for a new mixed-use village was the result of visionary campus and civic leadership, and serves as a prime example of how a successful town-gown partnership can lead to a "win-win" for all stakeholders.

With increasing demand for healthcare professionals, the need to train nurses and allied health professionals with workforce-ready skill sets is essential to statewide health and well-being. Using an integrated approach, instructors, practitioners, and designers collaborated to develop physical solutions that support Wake Tech Community College’s pedagogical approach for training skilled graduates. The new Health Science 2 Building and its simulation spaces were designed to foster active learning through educational spaces that mirror a variety of healthcare environments.

Creative thinking resulted in innovative solutions when Austin Community College (ACC) took taken over the Highland Mall in central Austin, TX. This is a part of a city initiative to improve Austin's entire airport corridor, and the Greater Highland Mall Redevelopment envisions the site as a "new urban" community. Learn about the process that ACC used to facilitate the deal, the innovative pedagogical changes, and the programming and pre-project planning that made this very exciting project a success.

Fayetteville State University (FSU) is an historically black college and university (HBCU) and member of the prestigious University of North Carolina System. It's located in one of the most diverse cities in the country, and is a neighbor to Fort Bragg, one of the nation’s largest military installations. FSU is advancing interdisciplinary science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers for its graduates with the near completion of its new LEED Gold science and technology center. The center addresses serious environmental issues, and is one of the first major projects in its recent campus master plan.

Planning for the World Beyond Our Walls

Anita Brown-Graham will discuss the vital role of public colleges and universities in fostering collaboration and cross-sector innovation in communities beyond institutional walls. More than 1,200 college and university chancellors and presidents have joined Campus Compact, pledging to educate students so they have the skills needed to creatively solve their most pressing, community-wide issues. Many strive to attain this goal through grassroots efforts, but the Institute for Emerging Issues (IEI) at NC State brings this effort statewide. With the Emerging Issues Commons in the brand new James B. Hunt, Jr. Library on Centennial Campus, IEI has designed a physical space and online hub that will connect leaders in North Carolina to information, data and people who are inspired to transform their communities for the better and drive economic development throughout the state. This innovative technology breaks down geological barriers and will allow citizens to connect on the issues that matter most in their communities, learning from and collaborating with experts, mentors and peers alike.
