Conference Theme

Today, campus safety and security extends beyond the realm of physical and personal safety and security. It includes security of infrastructure (power, telecommunications, water) and, particularly in today's economic climate, financial security. This half-day conference will focus on the response of major institutions and systems to a variety of threats including physical assaults, climactic events, information systems breach, pandemics, and financial downturns. With presentations led by speakers who have hands-on experience in their respective areas, each presentation is expected to include ample time for dialogue with the audience. The centerpiece of the morning and afternoon presentations will be a buffet lunch and a talk by a nationally known speaker on "Leadership in the Face of Crisis". We invite you to join us at one of the premier institutions in the nation to engage in energetic dialogue on these important topics.

Planning for Safety and Security
Diane ZahmPresenters: Diane Zahm, Associate Professor Urban Affairs and Planning, Virginia Tech
The changing nature of higher education has significant implications for crime prevention, and Virginia Tech became an international symbol of the impact of safety and security on campuses. With lessons learned from the events in Blacksburg and through a career in crime prevention planning, Diane will talk about how campus planning and crime prevention can build in security as part of new construction (master plan, design guidelines, capital budget, etc.). She will also touch on campus safety audits, incorporating safety and security into policy, and town-gown relations in this presentation.

Campus Planning, Design and Construction
Tallman TraskPresenters: Tallman Trask, Executive Vice President, Duke University
Dr. Trask will provide an overview of campus planning at Duke University during his 13-year tenure as Executive Vice President overseeing campus planning, design and construction. During this time, the University has commissioned several studies of campus planning and constructed $1 billion of new buildings on one of America's most beautiful college campuses. Dr. Trask will review how the campus planning landscape has changed in recent years and, looking to the future, will discuss considerations–and costs -which now must be taken into consideration in terms of information technology, physical security and especially sustainability in the context of campus planning.

Noon–1:30 PM
Effective Leadership In the Face of Crisis
Doug McVadonPresenters: Doug McVadon, Principal, Dorrier Underwood
Leadership in preparing for a crisis and in managing both the crisis and the aftermath of a crisis is a skill that some leaders have instinctively but that others must acquire through training. This interactive process to explore what makes a good leader and how to expand your own leadership skills will be led by Doug McVadon, who combined his first career in broadcast news (1979-1996) with a dozen years of international management consulting experience (1997-2009) to become a highly sought after public speaker who has led seminars and workshops for over 20,000 people nationally.

Campus Emergency Notification
Jeff McCrackenPresenters: Jeff McCracken, Chief of Police and Director of Public Safety, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill
Chief McCracken will describe UNC Chapel Hill's emergency notification system: Alert Carolina. The development of the system—things to consider—and some of the lessons learned in the process will be covered. He will also discuss the implementation of the recommendations contained in the "University of North Carolina Campus Safety Task Force Report" that was issued at the beginning of 2008.

2:30 PM–3:30 PM

Financial security today is more important than ever as higher education in both the public and private sector reels from the global financial crisis with budget cuts, salary freezes, and capital projects coming to a halt. Having been the financial leader of major public institutions in North Carolina and Georgia, Ron will convene a broad-reaching panel of experts who will talk about the current and projected state of the credit market as it affects capital projects, enrollment, and enrollment, and his panel will include the financial leaders of the University of North Carolina System, a nationally recognized investment banking firm, the securities and underwriting arm of the largest commercial bank in the region, and a bond attorney of one of the region's most respected law firms.
