The intent of the Symposium is to inform the audience of how fundamental and pervasive the effects of Big Data are to research universities and its campus infrastructure. Historically, the IT infrastructure utility has been regarded as a relatively straightforward utility that did not, in itself, drive campus planning and design (beyond the need for data closets and cable run limits, etc.). The data processing (i.e. computational and sequencing) was distributed and occurred in an ad hoc manner. Viewed now in its entirety as an emerging, exascale cyberinfrastructure enabling the research, education and technology for the 4th Paradigm in science, an explanation of the potential for cyberinfrastructure to change the basis for campus planning is both timely and urgent.
