"Planning & Building New Within an Historic Campus Context"

Friday, February 15, 2008
8:00AM–3:00PM
University of Southern California-Davidson Conference Center-Embassy Room
Los Angeles, CA (USA)

Thank you to everyone who made this event a success.
Everyone who attended this event will receive an email once the conference proceedings become available.
Hope to see you at the next Pacific regional event on March 14!

An institution’s planning and architectural character is derived from the cultural and regional influences of the time in which the campus was established. Different eras invoke different values, academic missions and economic restraints, from which an historic campus character is formed. How are today’s challenges and paradigms in campus planning, building and development different from those faced when the campus was initially formed? How does an institution address these differences when planning campus expansions and improvements or new building projects? Do they possess physical characteristics that respond to the historic character of the campus? Is it important that they do so?

The purpose of this symposium is to explore how different institutions approach the physical development of their campus. What are their priorities? What guidelines and tools do they have in place to achieve campus planning and building goals within the institution’s historic context?

Below are potential issues to be addressed:

Academic Planning
  • How do an institution’s academic goals and imperatives influence new campus development?
Financial Planning
  • With multiple internal interests competing for limited financial resources, how does an institution address the financial issues related to campus development?
  • Are there premiums identified with planning and design goals and guidelines that are factored into annual budgets and capital campaigns?
Physical Planning
  • Compare and contrast an institution’s historic physical plan with a current plan for growth and change.
  • Should institutions develop new design guidelines for campus growth that provide road maps for new planning and design projects?
  • How are these tools used?
  • What process is in place to balance competing needs and ensure the campus planning and design goals are met?

Lauren Cooper, Director of Facilities Planning Design & Construction
San Diego State University

Come and hear how San Diego State University, now a comprehensive university with over 39,000 students and $160 million annually in research projects, began with seven original Spanish Mission-style buildings in the 1930's, was diverted from the original aesthetics during decades-long expansion periods, and has today redirected the campus architecture to return to a Spanish form that both respects the past and rejoices in the future.

10:00AM–10:50AM Context and Content: A Modern Approach to Historic Cores
Jorge de la Cal, Associate Principal, CO Architects
James Simeo, Associate Principal, CO Architects

Campuses with historic cores provide opportunities to connect to a sense of tradition and identity. Planners and designers can take advantage of these opportunities by aligning themselves with what is best in that heritage while addressing the needs of the modern environment. This session provides general principles to consider when approaching the design of buildings with strong contextual cues or mandates. Case studies provide examples of good campus buildings that successfully combine modern technical requirements with a strong sense of place.
