Connecting Preservation Planning to Overall Campus Strategic Planning
Presenters:
Aaron Jon Hyland, Principal, Architectural Resources Group; R. Brooks Jeffery, Dean/Institutional Planning, College of Architecture & Landscape
Architecture, University of Arizona; Emily B. Marthinsen, Associate Director/Phys & Environmental Planning, University of California-Berkeley
Abstract:
This session will present lessons learned from the recently completed master planning efforts at UC Berkeley and the current preservation plan at the
University of Arizona, both funded by Getty Campus Heritage grants. Discover the value a preservation plan can provide to overall strategic and master
planning efforts. Once established, a preservation plan can be a guiding resource for all involved, from the maintenance and grounds staff, to campus
planners and facility managers, to the university administration. Understand how to involve all stakeholders in the process and how this plan can become
a breathing living document that wont sit on a shelf.
Healthy Learning Environments: Integrating Green Design & Educational Delivery
Presenters:
Mark Cork, Principal, Mahlum Architects; Anne Schopf, Design Principal, Mahlum Architects
Abstract:
Green approaches to campus development are becoming the norm for many institutions. Significant opportunities are lost, however, when sustainable
strategies are implemented without integrated consideration of core values and facility program. At The Evergreen State College, a collaborative
approach yielded a building where interdisciplinary learning, environmental responsibility, and occupant health are supported holistically. 2005
AIA-COTE Top Ten Green Buildings award recipient, Seminar II leverages sustainable features to advance the Colleges interdisciplinary, collaborative
teaching model, and enhance community and learning outcomes.
What Can Physiological Responses Tell Us About Designing Educational Facilities?
Presenters:
Eve A. Edelstein, Visiting Scholar, University of Calfornia, San Diego; Frederick M. Marks, Director/Science & Technology, AC Martin Partners;
Caren Sax, Professor, San Diego Community College District Administrative Offices
Abstract:
This session will describe the neural aspects of learning and responses in context of college and university settings. Findings in behavioral and
cellular research over the past decade have led scientists to conclude that human beings react to their environment differently depending upon age,
gender, disabilities, and past experiences. The brain processes what is going on in the body and a change in the environment may result in a change
in how one feels and functions.
