MAX Light Rail
Registrants may also take the MAX Light Rail from the airport. Instead of renting a car, consider taking the Airport MAX light rail directly to downtown Portland. At the airport follow signs to ground transportation/MAX Light Rail. Purchase the $1.65 one-way fare at the station ticket kiosk. Trains depart every 15 minutes. Travel time to downtown Portland is about 37 minutes. Exit MAX at the Pioneer Square (North) stop and walk south on either 5th or 6th Street two (2) blocks to the Hilton. You may also purchase a 3-day adventure pass online at http://www.trimet.org/fares/index.htm.

Most conference attendees will find convenient light rail, street car and bus transit readily available and easy to use. Tickets and passes are interchangeable between all three of TriMet's transportation modes (buses, MAX Light Rail, and Portland Streetcar). This transportation is free in the downtown "fareless square" zone.

Portland Highlights

Set against the backdrop of majestic Mount Hood, Portland combines a sophisticated, cosmopolitan atmosphere with refreshingly friendly, small-town warmth that makes it a natural for tours of all types. Whether in groups or individually, visitors can cruise Portland's scenic rivers, stroll through gardens and parks, shop in a tempting array of stores and boutiques, then wrap up the day with world-class dining and entertainment.

Portlanders indulge their love of the outdoors in some 200 city parks, including Forest Park, 4,900 acres of primeval forest with some 50 miles of hiking trails; Mount Tabor Park encompassing an extinct volcano. Washington Park, the crown jewel of the park system, has 332 hilly acres of forests, sweeping vistas, and manicured gardens. You'll find more than 400 varieties of roses at the International Rose Test Garden. The Metro Washington Park Zoo is noted for its Arctic animals and elephant breeding program, and also noted is the World Forestry Center whose displays include a talking tree.

You can sample haute couture and hot cuisine in Portland's Pearl District, which has quickly become the place to see and be seen. The Pearl is composed of 50 city blocks of industrial warehouses turned sleek loft apartments, cutting-edge art galleries and vibrant international restaurants. Though the neighborhood features outstanding brewpubs, delicious international cuisine and the world's largest independent bookstore, the soul of the Pearl is in its galleries.

You can also find great shopping areas in the bustling Northwest/Nob Hill neighborhood, another of the city's hippest hubs. Seemingly designed for people-watching, the main streets never fail to produce an eclectic mix of leather-clad Harley riders, immaculately dressed West Hills' shoppers searching for imported linens, and boisterous Gen-Xers enjoying pizza and microbrews at sidewalk cafes.
