Integrated Processes

St. Olaf College will serve as the setting and focus of this exciting one-day conference. The college is unique for its incredible commitment to sustainability, which is evident throughout their campus, from a wind turbine that supplies a third of their electricity to the 175 tons of food waste they compost annually. The new LEED Platinum science facility, the Regents Hall of Natural and Mathematical Sciences, has also become a learning laboratory for integrating new pedagogies, such as green chemistry, and experimenting with classroom seating and showcase laboratories. Most of these unique elements are the result of a shared vision, known as The Seven I’s, that guided the college’s planning effort and close collaboration between the college’s stakeholders, design team, and contractor.

The conference will include presentations, tours, and a panel discussion. Representatives from the administration, staff, facilities department, student body, and design and construction team will discuss the overall vision for the campus and how key elements were implemented and evaluated. Tours will highlight the sustainable features throughout the campus. The panelists will discuss successes and lessons learned from various projects’ efforts to integrate both the building goals and many sustainability goals during the design and construction process on campus.

1. Discuss campus master planning concepts, including designing beyond a single facility.
2. Link sustainable campus design with educational opportunities, rethinking the educational environment in terms of sustainability and 21st century learning pedagogy.
3. List site design features that contribute to campus sustainability, including practices for paving, building site, and orientation; non-traditional campus uses such as gardens, food service, and storm water recharge; and emerging green incentives such as preferred parking for hybrid and fuel efficient vehicles, reflective roofing, and sensors for lighting.
4. Evaluate the impact that pedagogical and curricular innovations are making on learning environments for the sciences.
