Learning Spaces: Planning and Executing Active Learning Spaces

In collaboration with the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities and Learning Spaces Collaboratory, SCUP is pleased to present the half-day seminar Learning Spaces: Planning and Executing Active Learning Spaces.

This seminar is open to consultants, campus planners, facilities, and academics who are striving to improve their learning spaces. There are many unique interdisciplinary approaches to learning spaces and each college and consultant has their own perspective. This will be a participatory session for evaluation of current pedagogy, space, and culture. We will examine:

• What an institutional "planning" culture should be to ensure that the physical environment for learning enables an academic community to face its future with confidence and distinction.
• What are incremental steps for improving existing spaces; i.e. moving through the vision process to a more "useable" vision.
• How cross-functional teams can be more functional; i.e. how to advance collaborative partnerships between academics and facilities officers.
• How to define active learning spaces and how that converts to usability.   

Seminar participants will be divided among the following working groups: (Important! During registration, please select your top three working group choices.)

• Grounding the planning of learning spaces on curricular and pedagogical planning
• Orchestrating informed discussions about contemporary findings from research on how people learn; who does that and how?
• Addressing the need for incrementally improving spaces (increasing technological sophistication?) for results
• Moving through the visioning process toward a "usable" vision; how to get results
• Defining what flexibility means for a particular culture/project
• Advancing collaborative partnerships between academics and facilities officers
• Dealing with "nay-sayer" faculty or facilities folks; how to create and implement a positive team to create new learning spaces
