October 15–17, 2007
Palmer Commons

Conference Theme

As higher education planning professionals, we perceive ourselves as co-inquirers, learning designers, and leaders of change management, but have we really responded to the changes taking place on campuses across the country?

What are the demographics, needs, circumstances, life experiences, learning styles, and motivations of this generation of students and the future generation of faculty?

How can we make sure we attend to learning holistically—to think of learning ecosystems, learning ecology rather than individual learning environments?

What brings students and faculty together and what separates them?
As planning professionals, how can we respond to the changing culture with spaces that respond to the unique needs of its users?

The SCUP North Central Region invites you to submit your proposal for presentation sessions that may include panel presentations, demonstrations, or round table discussions that focus on the learning experience. Proposals must be related to the theme "Our Campus—My Space"

Presentation Topics

Please consider the following questions/thoughts when preparing your proposal.

  • What challenges does higher education face and how might learning-centeredness help and/or hinder these realities?
  • Are there new ways of thinking about physical environments?
  • How do we successfully introduce technology into new spaces?
  • How do we address learning outcomes assessment?
  • How do we deal with fiscal realities? What are the constraints to how we can change?
  • Is the physical environment a motivator or a satisfier?
  • Who are the knowers and who are the learners? What message do our campuses send about the answer to this question?
  • How can spaces/built environment that model environmentally sustainable practices be made visible and understandable to all?

In keeping with the theme of the conference, we would like to encourage all presenters to think as if you are in a classroom and structure your proposal in such a way that the conference participants get in the mind-set of a "student". Proposals that include "hands-on" learning are encouraged. All sessions or classes will be held in Palmer Commons, our host location. However; you can use the campus as your laboratory and suggest that your class might be held in strategic locations on campus. For example, a proposal could combine a session with a tour of a facility to demonstrate the lesson learned or new idea to be shared.
