(CC-02) An Adaptable Learning Village at Ohio Northern University
Presenters: Robert L. Bostwick, Principal for Design, Collins Gordon Bostwick Architects; Carter A Edman, Project Leader, Collins Gordon Bostwick Architects
What is "Affinity Housing"? Possibly the next step beyond "Living-Learning." Ohio Northern University's (ONU) vision of a housing village serving various groups with individual amenities, a living-learning component, and a community aesthetic, on a realistic budget became reality with a unique "chapter house" design. This architectural concept, with individual chapter houses connected to larger residence halls, maintains full residence occupancy while affinity groups' memberships may fluctuate and allows the residence portion to be cost-efficient. This presentation will discuss how this concept can work at your school.
(CC-05) Coming of Age: Reinventing Two Community College Campuses
Presenters: Robert A. Getz, Director/Physical Plant, Harper College; Douglas R. Kozma, Associate, JJR; Larry E. Ramseyer, Director of Facilities Management, Delta College
Examine how two community colleges in Michigan and Illinois are redefining their image as a response to their educational marketplace, institutional vision, and financial resources. Innovative master planning and site design are reinventing the campus as a place for students, lifelong learning, and community pride. The panel will explore the emerging "brand loyalty" these community colleges are enjoying, how these institutions are impacting two-year higher education, and how the physical environment has shaped their transformation.

(CC-06) Angels & Demons: Aligning Strategic Planning and Accreditation
Presenters: John C. Adams, Assistant Vice Chancellor, University of Nebraska Medical Center
Planners aren't angels, and the devil didn't invent accreditation. Instead, both processes have heavenly and hellish aspects, and aligning them makes sense. The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) updates its strategic plan each spring and is completing its preparation for re-accreditation. This presentation will address how UNMC aligned strategic planning and accreditation preparation by focusing on its vision and by engaging faculty, staff and students. UNMC embraced re-accreditation as an opportunity to evaluate performance, to identify challenges and opportunities, and to tell its story.

(CC-11) Successful Space Management—Algonquin's Experience/Experiments!
Presenters: Phillip J. Rouble, Facilities Planning Specialist, Algonquin College
Through emphasis on institutional success, a maturing space management process and innovative "space mining" techniques, Algonquin College now accommodates 70 percent more students in 10 percent less space than in 1990. The space management process relied on: the corporate management of space; targets for space utilization; and a space costing model that works. Space mining extracted increased capacity from an existing inventory of space. A roadmap is presented to smooth the ride for others needing to follow a similar path to success.

(CC-15) Integrated Planning: A 20 Year Odyssey
Presenters: James Elsass, Associate Vice President/Budget & Program Planning, Northwestern University; Craig Johnson, Senior Budget Analyst, Northwestern University
Review and discuss the development of integrated planning and budgeting processes at a major research university. Steps include: 1) strengthening budgeting process, 2) integrating planning and budgeting processes, 3) instituting multi-year plans with budgets, and 4) establishing a hybrid financial management structures for some areas of institution. A new element is to focus on "all-funds" budgeting as part of a financial system replacement project. A case study approach will be used to demonstrate the linkage of strategic changes and change in managerial practice.

(CC-18) Bottleneck—Capacity Management, Growing Enrollments in a Fixed Room Inventory
Presenters: Linda S Knudson, Dean, Continuing Education & Community Services, Johnson County Community College; Marilyn D. Rhinehart, Vice President of Instruction, Johnson County Community College; Melvin Tyler, Interim Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Enrollment, University of Missouri-Kansas City
Does your institution feel out of space during primetime? Can you easily identify the room types and cause for the space bottleneck? Have you wanted to develop an allocation policy to spread out course offerings? Discover how University of Missouri-Kansas City and Johnson County Community College first identified bottleneck rooms and times and then developed allocation strategies to relieve their bottlenecks. Presenters will discuss their institutional missions and enrollment goals and how they partnered with Astra Schedule to find creative ways to maximize utilization during primetime, allow for growth with existing resources, and how to develop an academic scheduling policy and enforce it.

(CC-20) Integrated Planning for Capital Projects—Building from the Strategic Plan
Presenters: Sally Grans, Systems Director/Facilities Planning & Programming, Minnesota State Colleges and Universities; Todd Harmening, Program Director/Planning, Minnesota State Colleges and Universities
Converging forces such as aging facilities, increasingly diverse learners, technological change, and restricted resources are redefining the planning and execution of academic and capital priorities. This session will share how these and other forces are being addressed under the construct of a new strategic plan that is shaping system-wide capital priorities and will strengthen the integration of campus academic and facilities planning. Innovative partnerships, creative financing, and multifunctional space design and assignment will be among the effective practices shared.

(CC-22) Dwelling Well on Campus: Impacts of Housing Typologies on Student Wellness
Presenters: Nate Goore, Principal, MK Think
Recent trends in student housing on college campuses have seen an exponential increase in construction cost per bed, fueled by an increase in individual space and amenities. For many campuses, this "housing arms race" is making the prospect of growing the on-campus resident population increasingly daunting. While students prefer these building typologies, are they a good investment? This session, based on research presented at the SCUP 2006 Pacific Regional Conference, will introduce findings from a statistical study that correlates student housing typologies with measures of physical, mental, and emotional wellness. These findings drive a set of recommendations for more effective student housing from both financial and wellness perspectives.
