Designing a Building, Developing a Curriculum: Purdue University's Biomedical Engineering Program
Abstract: Universities around the nation are presented with multiple challenges. Purdue University's biomedical engineering (BME) program is thriving. The challenge for the planning and design team for the new BME building on Purdue's new Discovery park included creating a building not just to house programs, but also to respond to a new curriculum. An interactive design process and a concurrent effort achieved a more responsive solution. At this informative session, attendees will learn about this unique approach to planning and designing flexible, multidisciplinary teaching and research spaces that respond to the future.

Collaboration, Institutional Memory, a Consistent Theme—Recapitalizing an Amazing Resource
Abstract: The law school at the University of Chicago moved into a new, Eero Saarinen-designed building in 1959. Since the mid-'90s, the deans' office, university facilities personnel, and the consulting design team have collaborated in the systematic expansion and renovation that continues to elevate the experience of top students and faculty. Institutional commitment to the strong original design intent avoided conflict and has resulted in a cohesive, timeless aesthetic despite changed staff and four administrations.
Presenters: Mark C. Hirons, Senior Associate, OWP/P Architects, Inc.; John M. Syvertsen, President, OWP/P Architects, Inc.
Redefining the Academic Library: Case Studies in Collaboration
Abstract: Once viewed primarily as an information repository, the library's role has broadened to support the pedagogical shift from independent learning to team learning. Collaborative and interactive spaces have now become major library components. Advancements in technology and the Internet have also changed library planning approaches. This session will explore the evolving role of the library and, through a presentation of emerging trends and case studies, will provide a unique perspective into understanding the link between learning and physical space.

From Landfill to Landmark Through Planning
Abstract: Miami University Hamilton, a regional campus, sits on 90 acres including an abandoned landfill from the 1950s, with six buildings. The presence of the landfill stimulated the collaborative efforts of a botanist, donor, administrator, facilities director, artist, architect, and student to design a conservatory that addressed the academic plan, the physical plan, and the community plan and integrated art in an inventive and instructive way.
Presenters: Daniel Hall, Executive Director & Professor, Miami University Hamilton Campus; Mary Beth McGrew, Architect, HarleyEllis; Richard H. Munson, Professor and Manager of the Conservatory, Miami University Hamilton Campus
From Fragmentation to Collaboration: Planning for Teaching with Technology
Abstract: Governors State University moved from a fragmented approach to planning for teaching with technology to a collaborative paradigm. Before 2000 its four colleges wrestled separately with implementing teaching with technology. The information technology policy and planning council brought the colleges, academic support units, and information technology services together to strategize on obtaining hardware and software. However, progress was only achieved, once these needs were embedded in a plan to transform program curriculum for technology enhanced learning across the university.
Presenters: Diane Dates Casey, Dean of Library Services and Academic Computing, Governors State University; John Stoll, Dean of Extended Learning and Communication Services, Governors State University
