Implementing Sustainable Design Strategies at North Hennepin Community College
Presenters: Bill Breyfogle, Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System Office; Edward J. Kodet, Kodet Architectural Group; Paul G. May, Kodet Architectural Group; Dawn Reimer, North Hennepin Community College

Sustainable design was critical to the success of the General Education Building at North Hennepin Community College remodeling and addition. To better serve today's students and staff, the building was improved through implementation of sustainable design strategies as well as sound educational planning. Guidelines developed by the State of Minnesota and Hennepin County provide a checklist of sustainable expectations that address site, water, energy, interior environment, materials, and waste methods. This session will explore how sustainability can be accomplished to enhance higher educational environments and return long-term value to community's school investments. Topics include discussions of using daylighting and indoor air quality to enhance the learning environment.

The Challenges of Delivering Facilities for the Class of 2009
Presenters: Edwin R. Schmidt, Concord Eastridge Education; Steven R. Schnoor, Turner Construction Company

As we look to the campuses of the future traditional sources of construction funding are becoming less and less available. This "drying" up has forced many colleges and universities to begin looking for non-traditional ways of financing their construction programs. These non traditional funding alternatives are allowing non-traditional delivery approaches and even less traditional project solutions. In this work session a series of case studies will be presented in order to demonstrate the possibilities open to the attendees.

University of Notre Dame's Giovanini Commons: Reshaping the Learning Process
Presenters: William F. Ketcham, VOA Associates Inc; Douglas J. Kroll, University of Notre Dame

Individuals learn in a number of different modes: through observation, through cognition, through a professor's lecture. The leadership of Notre Dame's Mendoza College of Business sought a better way to impart learning: through experience. An utterly unique facility among American business schools, Mendoza's Giovanini Commons is a flexible, decentralized learning environment based on the principles of experiential learning. Hear the story of how this facility came into being and how it is reshaping the minds of tomorrow's leaders.

Coppin State University: An Institution "Of and For Its Community"
Presenter: Matt A. D'Amico, Design Collective, Inc

Coppin State University is a historically black university focused in liberal arts and sciences, and health and human services. Located in West Baltimore, the University has an inextricable relationship with its community, and a mission that focuses on the needs and aspirations of Baltimore’s central city. Coppin, together with the Coppin Heights CDC, has developed a new community revitalization plan. This presentation will review Coppin’s role in the community redevelopment efforts, the new 2004 plan and the integration of academic and community programs.
