LEED, CHPS and Green Globes: Alternative High Performance Building Standards Panel
Chin Lin - Principal, HMFH Architects, Inc.
Warren G. Cochrane - Principal, RDK Engineers
This panel will discuss the "state of the union" in high performance building standards, including LEED, CHPS and Green Globes. How is LEED being customized to respond to changing building types? How does the commercial building standard of Green Globes impact the development of alternative performance standards? What is the effect of adaptation of the California High Performance Building Standards (CHPS) in New England (MA-CHPS and NE-CHPS) on construction projects? What is the impact of financial incentives to apply MA-CHPS standards in school construction projects on other standards? In this changing framework for sustainability, how can owners and design professionals create the best financial balance in planning and constructing high performance buildings? The panel will encourage discussion among the audience to share best practices. |

Welcome Address
Selma Botman - President of the University of Southern Maine
USM takes great pride in its commitment to sustainability, which has been most recently advanced by the completion of the Wishcamper Center, which features a nearly carbon-neutral design and is built to the highest LEED standards. This represents a model for future development of our campuses. Indeed, USM is beginning a purposeful strategic planning process designed to inform our efforts to move the University toward fulfilling its promise as northeast New England's most dynamic, creative, and nimble public university. During this period of economic uncertainty, USM has the opportunity to seize the initiative and to reposition itself to emerge leaner, stronger, and better positioned within American public higher education. |

Richard Pattenaude - Chancellor of the University of Maine System
The UMaine system includes seven campuses and 10 regional outreach centers, serving more than 45,000 students. Its distinct challenge in the northern New England region is to be an agent of change and economic development. Richard Pattenaude, Chancellor of the University of Maine system will discuss how the seven campuses of the UMaine system have identified sustainability as one of the five agenda goals for action. He will share how environmental stewardship directly impacts the higher ed economy in many different forms. |

Panel of Maine Dining Service Leaders
Joe Klaus - Assistant Director of Dining Services, Colby College
Christine Schwartz - Director of Dining Services, Bates College
Jon Wiley - Purchasing Manager, Dining Services, Bowdoin College
A core principle of many Maine colleges and universities is a commitment to sustainability. In this session, we will highlight key sustainability initiatives at three colleges in Maine. Christine Schwartz from Bates College will discuss how the College reduced the amount of waste being sent to the landfill by 83% by employing a holistic approach to waste management. This approach provided additional opportunities to partner with the local community and an educational opportunity within the college on environmental stewardship. As a result, this has dramatically decreased the college's financial commitment for waste removal. John Wiley, Purchasing Manager at Bowdoin College, will discuss the role of purchasing in improving sustainability practices, not only within the college, but also among college vendors. In addition, Wiley will share the recipe for the development of the successful Bowdoin Organic Garden and where the program is headed. At Colby College, education has been a cornerstone of the all of the dining service greening efforts. Joe Klaus will discuss Sodexho's environmental program. This involves tailoring of the programs to encompass a long-term strategy for community benefit, from working with distributors to supply more local product to encouraging students to carry reusable beverage mugs and reducing overall food waste. |
