Traveling to Canada from the United States

Traveling from the United States to Canada is easy. A U.S. citizen must show either a U. S. Passport OR proof of U. S. citizenship (such as an official birth certificate with a raised seal, naturalization papers, etc.) and photo identification when passing through customs. A driver's license alone is not considered proof of citizenship for entry into Canada. U. S. citizens entering Canada from a third country must have a valid passport. A passport and visa is required from all other countries.

Goods and services tax (GST) is 7% throughout Canada. You may be eligible for a refund on certain goods and services you purchase in Canada, particularly for your hotel stay. Provincial sales tax (PST) is not refundable upon your return to the U. S. If you are not a resident of Canada and you purchased eligible goods and services for personal use you are likely to qualify for a tax refund. You must apply for this refund within one year of the purchase of such goods or services. Your hotel (or other short term, such as camping) accommodations are eligible for refund if they total more than $200.00 CAN before GST or PST are included. You must present the original receipt (no photocopies, debt or credit card slips or other facsimiles are accepted). Your receipt must also show the number of nights you stayed. Any single good costing more than $50.00 CAN, exclusive of taxes, may be eligible for a refund on GST. Again, you must have original receipts. The good purchased must be for use primarily outside of Canada. Tax refund forms will be included in your conference registration materials.
