Improving Universities, Improving Students’ Experiences:
How to Start to Address a Multi-Billion Dollar Problem

In this full-day workshop, participants will learn how lean principles and tools can help them effectively address problems they face in operations, deferred maintenance, and renewal on campus. The group will work collaboratively to deeply understand a commonly shared challenge, generate and prioritize ideas to address the challenge, and develop actionable solutions. Throughout the workshop, participants will engage in hands-on activities that reinforce lean principles and tools. By practicing what they learn, participants will understand the value and relevance of this approach, and how it can be applied in other settings.

Participants will be asked to complete a brief survey prior to the workshop to provide information on their most common challenges related to capital renewal, operations, and maintenance. The results of this survey will inform the content of the workshop, so participants are encouraged to spend a few minutes completing it in order to gain the most value from this workshop. A survey link will be sent to each participant after he or she has registered.

Learning Outcomes

1. Learn about lean principles (particularly “value versus waste”), tools, and resources by working on a specific, real-world problem related to operations, deferred maintenance, and renewal on campuses.
2. Learn how to systematically analyze problems and identify their root causes.
3. Learn how to prioritize ideas to solve a real-world facilities problem with multiple stakeholders who have different interests and needs.
4. Use lean tools to co-create solutions to this real-world facilities problem based on ideas generated by the group.
5. Understand how lean strategies practiced in this workshop could be applied to other facilities situations and challenges.
