Conference ThemeMany colleagues and universities in the Mid-Atlantic region are taking a leadership role in environmental stewardship and sustainability through academic pursuits and facility operations. Accordingly, the Mid-Atlantic region of SCUP invites you to share the experiences of your peers and colleagues on Friday, April 17, at a one-day symposium focusing on the sustainability achievements of Virginia Commonwealth University, the University of Richmond, and the University of Virginia. The one-day symposium will be held at Virginia Commonwealth University's Inger and Walter Rice Center for Environmental Life Sciences. The center is located approximately 25 minutes southeast of VCU's main campus on 342 acres along the historic James River and has been designed to achieve a LEED Platinum rating. Attendees will learn how the building incorporates such features as goethermal heating and cooling, solar electrical power generation and advanced water recycling. Program:8:30 AM–9:00 AM Coffee and registration 9:00 AM–11:00 AM Building Platinum: The Virginia Commonwealth University(VCU) Rice Center Leonard A. Smock, Director, VCU School of Life Sciences Carl Purdin, VCU Rice Center Project Manager, Assistant Director, Planning and Design VCU Facility Management Explore the design, implementation and operations of the VCU Rice Center. This facility has been designed to achieve a LEED Platinum rating. Attendees will learn how the building incorporates such features as geothermal heating cooling, solar electrical power generation and advanced water recycling. 11:00 AM–1:00 PM Lunch and Tours 1:00 PM–1:50 PM University of Richmond–A Committment to Sustainability Trey McDonald, LEED AP, Sustainability Coordinator, University of Richmond Trey McDonald will discuss the University’s commitment to achieving climate neutrality. One of the ways climate neutrality will be achieved is by designing all of future buildings so that they will earn a LEED silver certification or higher from the USGBC. 2:00 PM–2:50 PM Sustainable Systems Integration Modeling for Campus Planning Avinash Srivastava, AICP Discover EDAW’s Sustainable Systems Integrated Model (SSIM), a climate change/ land planning tool created to enhance the sustainability planning process. EDAW will discuss how modeling sustainability performance and costs of various sustainability measures can result in an economically viable and whole systems program that can meet specific targets. 3:00 PM–3:50 PM University of Virginia:
