A Guide to Planning for Change

by Don M. Norris and Nick L. Poulton

"A Guide to Planning for Change discusses the real issues, ones I've experienced in numerous institutions...this book is an excellent reference for any type of planning. I'm making use of it now."

Ted Weidner, Assistant Vice Chancellor, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

The long-awaited update and enhancement of A Guide for New Planners.

A Guide to Planning for Change combines the practical insights of Norris and Poulton's earlier work in A Guide for New Planners with future vision and insight.

It summarizes the new and emerging challenges facing leaders of colleges and universities; discusses new techniques and tools (most notably, analytics) to create an enhanced model for planning in higher education; takes the reader back through the history of planning and strategy execution in higher education by outlining its many eras and stages of development, and highlights the latest thinking and writing on the topic on integrated planning.

The enhanced planning model in this book recognizes the many internal, external, up, down, and sideways forces, challenges, and opportunities facing higher education. In the end, it is the successful execution of strategy that will have a lasting impact on the institution.

Norris consults on planning, executing strategy, and developing organizational capacity with a wide range of colleges and universities, corporations, professional societies and associations, and other nonprofits. His recent work on action analytics is enabling colleges and universities to change decision-making behavior; build cultures of performance measurement and improvement; and align institutional strategies, actions, and metrics.
