Sustainability and Planning:
An Integrated Approach to Academics, Resource Planning, and Facilities

Colleges and universities are leaders in the global sustainability movement. In the business world, sustainability means producing healthier communities, ecosystems and economies simultaneously, modeling possibilities for both students and the larger society. In higher education, education for a sustainable future means making the mission of the institution come alive. It means effectively preparing our students for the world in which they will live. Sustainability-focused institutions recognize that success lies in developing an integrated strategy, one that (1) ties sustainability to its core mission and is supported by senior leadership, (2) merges the planning efforts of academic, resource, and facilities professionals on campus, (3) lobbies for support from key constituents both on and off campus, and (4) identifies core funding. A good integrated plan addresses the kind of research, planning, implementation, and evaluation needed for a higher education environment.

SCUP, a recognized expert in the field of higher education planning and, in particular, campus-based sustainability, can provide you with the knowledge, connections and resources to identify, introduce, influence, and integrate sustainability efforts at your institution through effective integrated planning. This workshop will recognize that sustainability touches a number of fronts, including (but not limited to): curricula, research, operations, mission and planning, purchasing, community outreach and partnerships, student life, professional development, and design and construction. This long list cannot be covered in-depth in a single workshop, but participants will walk away with (1) an enhanced understanding of the role that each part plays within this integrated strategy, (2) best practices of long- term integrated sustainability planning, and (3) some new ideas for immediate action on their campuses.
