SCUP's Planning AcademiesAcademy Report to the BoardThe SCUP Academy Council Report to the SCUP Board is a flash report designed to inform SCUP’s Board of Directors and working groups at the strategic level as they set priorities and directions for the organization. The report is the product of a new collaboration between the members of SCUP’s four planning academies:
The primary focus of the members of the planning academies has been the oversight of the review and selection process for about 60 concurrent sessions on the annual conference program. BackgroundIn 2010, the SCUP Board of Directors asked the academies to expand their existing focus, and develop a way to collaboratively harvest information about overarching themes, sector trends, and emerging issues that might be identified through the review process, so they can be shared and used strategically by the board and SCUP’s numerous working groups. The board’s mandate to the academy council was: To share, in a coordinated and integrated manner, the wealth of knowledge, expertise, and information throughout each academy with the board, core committee structures, programs, and services of SCUP. To accomplish the board’s goal for a report that would inform its direction as well as SCUP’s numerous working groups, the academy council enlisted support from academy members in a survey and scanning project, based on the information they gleaned from the concurrent session proposals submitted each year to the annual conference. A total of 253 concurrent session proposals were submitted by the deadline of October 1, 2011, for 2012 annual conference consideration. All 91 members of SCUP’s four planning academies were offered the opportunity to contribute beyond the proposal review process to the development of the new scanning document requested by the SCUP board of directors. Fifty-two academy members accepted the invitation to participate in the broader scanning initiative. Their remarks, observations, and thoughts were synthesized by the academy council, who identified top trends or themes—essentially their "top seven" list. Academy conveners and SCUP staff synthesized the responses within the seven categories, identifying the primary trends and program opportunities. Information from this process formed the basis of this year’s first SCUP Academy Council Report to the Board. The report has been distributed to SCUP’s working groups and committees. Now that SCUP–48 concurrent sessions have been reviewed, work is underway on 2013's report to the board.
