Zero net energy buildings (ZNEB) are becoming more prevalent on campuses as well as off, but what are the psychological barriers for pursuing them more proactively? Similar to the way the industry cautiously approached LEED 10 years ago, a few forward-looking institutions are brazenly pushing ahead while others are waiting to see if the trend will continue. It definitely will, and achieving ZNE, like LEED, isn't as hard as everyone thinks. This program will look at ZNEBs completed on college and university campuses, and highlight those forward-looking campuses that are pushing ahead with ZNE policies.

The Decision Factors for Zero Net Energy Buildings - Where the Rubber Hits the Road
- Being First - At this point it's not about being first, it's about not getting left behind. There are already dozens of ZNEBs in the US, and hundreds when you include Europe and abroad. This program will look at the ZNEBs completed on college and university campuses - and highlight those forward-looking campuses that are instituting stringent ZNE policies.
- Design Drivers - Surprisingly, the design methodologies for achieving ZNE are not as cutting edge as you may think. The presenters will provide the range of design strategies employed on all completed ZNEBs with a focus on the most common and effective design techniques used to date.
- Technology - Do ZNEBs require cutting edge technology to be realized? The answer is (typically) no. Virtually every ZNEB has offset its energy needs through photovoltaics (PV), which begs the question: how are PVs improving and how fast are they advancing their efficiencies? The presenters will review research and offer insight into the next phase of PV design, when it will be affordable, and when you won't have a choice but to use it.
- Cost - What are the premium costs associated with going ZNE? Are costs rising, falling, or staying the same? The presenters will look at real data to determine what, if any, premiums you should expect when design a ZNEB.
Trends in Zero Net Energy Buildings
- The presenters will look at a case study to help you understand how basic strategies for achieving ZNE can be employed in real life. They will also review important new technologies and the smart design decisions that are coming into play.
