Saturday, July 27, 2013, 8:00 AM–12:00 PM in Departs from Lobby Level, City Side, SDCC Salk Institute Architectural TourSalk Institute Architectural TourThe Salk Institute was established in the 1960s by Jonas Salk, MD, the developer of the polio vaccine. Salk selected the world-renowned architect Louis I. Kahn as the person who could design the facility that he envisioned. Salk had a distinctive vision for the creation of the institute. He directed Kahn to provide spacious, unobstructed laboratory spaces that could be adapted to the ever-changing needs of science. The building materials had to be simple, strong, durable, and as maintenance-free as possible. You can see the impact of Kahn's architecture in the courtyard. Important to note are Kahn's imaginative use of space and his high regard for natural light. In response to Salk's request that the institute provide a welcoming and inspiring environment for scientific research, Kahn flooded the laboratories with daylight. The open courtyard of travertine marble acting as a facade to the sky adds to the monumental nature of the building. In 1992, the Salk received a Twenty-five Year Award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and was featured in the AIA exhibit “Structures of Our Time: 31 Buildings That Changed Modern Life.” The Salk Institute has been described in the San Diego Union-Tribune as the single most significant architectural site in San Diego. Tour includes transportation and boxed breakfast. Established in 1960, UC San Diego is an academic powerhouse and economic engine, recognized as one of the Top 10 Public Universities by US News and World Report. The 1,200-acre campus is located in La Jolla on a dramatic mesa above the Pacific Ocean. It contains natural chaparral-filled canyons, eucalyptus groves, urban plazas, and green lawns. The architectural vocabulary ranges from mid-century modernism to more recent buildings influenced by postmodern architecture. UC San Diego has an enrollment of more than 29,000 graduate and undergraduate students, and is known worldwide for its research strengths in a variety of disciplines. This three-hour walking tour will begin in the campus's University Center neighborhood with an overview of the campus planning framework to provide an understanding of the core planning and design principles. Visiting sites such as the landmark Geisel Library, and passing by Stuart Collection public art pieces, will highlight how UC San Diego cultivates integration. The tour will also include an overview of facilities in the Jacobs School of Engineering, the School of Medicine, and Revelle College. UC San Diego's interdisciplinary philosophy will be highlighted, with a focus on how it influences the campus built environment. The tour will end at the Revelle College Apartments, a LEED Platinum facility, which includes many creative sustainable design features in addition to views of the Pacific Ocean. This island of learning and leisure in the busy suburbs of San Diego is among the oldest and largest campuses in the California State University (CSU) system. It has a rich history that reaches back to the early development of the area and stands as an example of the power of vision and determination. It also has charm and tranquility that rivals any botanical park. Our walking tour will begin with lunch at the storied Scripps Cottage, the original women's center of the campus, and a story-board presentation regarding the history of the campus. Then we will visit the historic center of campus to uncover the architectural allegory built into the initial cluster of buildings. After considering some of the less-than-exemplary designs that followed WWII, we will tour through the present-day center of campus, where redevelopment is attempting to build bridges to the past that reflect the flavor and rationale of Spanish Colonial style. Our tour will end with a visit to the underground San Diego Metropolitan Transit System trolley station, which brings as many as 4,000 students and staff to campus daily, reducing traffic congestion and greenhouse pollution. Tour includes transportation and lunch. Cost: $60 USD Learning Outcomes:
