Closing Plenary at SCUP–44

Mediated Culture and the Future of the University
Michael Wesch provided a provocative look at how media change the way we view the world and influence everything from our conversations to how we structure our universities.

Wesch is an Assistant Professor of Cultural Anthropology at Kansas State University. In 2008, Michael received the CASE/Carnegie US Professor of the Year award for Doctoral and Research Universities.

We invite you to enjoy his presentation.

Opening Session at SCUP-44

Calling of the Tribes

Thanks to the generosity of our Portland, OR, Local Host Committee, attendees had the unique opportunity to view an original and improvisational theater centered on the phenomenal creations of Michael Curry.

Students from Portland State University and Portland Community College worked with Michael Curry and their professors to develop the story, choreography, and music for this production.

View this spectacular production.

Special thanks to the Local Host Committee Members for their contribution making this production possible—Michael Sestric (Chair), Elizabeth Anderson, Tom Bauer, Grant Bennett, Charlie Brucker, William Dann, Thomas Fortier, Kurt Haapala, Sarah Hacker, James Meyer, Darlene Morgan, Brian Newman, Patricia Parola, Lynn Parsons, Robyn Pierce, Ken Prie, Gregg Sanders, Carl Vance, Jon Wiener, Kyle Womack.

Interview with Michael Curry

In addition to lending his talents to students to create our opening session, Calling of the Tribes, Michael Curry attended and graciously allowed our conference chair, Philip Stack, to interview him. Michael is one of the world’s leading production designers. He works widely in both conceptual and technical development with the foremost entertainment companies. Michael has been the recipient of many prestigious awards for his continuing innovations in the fields of visual effects and puppetry design. He owns and operates Michael Curry Design Inc, which designs and creates live-performance oriented dimensional characters and productions.

Learn how Michael took on the challenge of incorporating students into this production.
