You've recognized the importance of integrated planning. You've convinced a few key stakeholders to adopt it. You may have even written an integrated plan for your campus. Now, how do you overcome the most daunting, most common challenge of integrated planning—implementation? Join two planners from Angelo State University, an integrated planning success story, who will share ideas, insights, and solutions you can employ on your campus.

Angelo State University (ASU) enacted integrated planning with such success, it become ingrained in the campus culture. How? ASU coordinated all its components of planning—the strategic plan, operations plan, facilities master plan, enrollment management plan, institutional effectiveness data, budgeting, resource allocation, and strategic priorities—into one integrated network, Strategic Planning Online. This network serves the university on a daily basis, not only capturing data but delivering it in a way that allows the user to evaluate the effectiveness of the current plan and nimbly adapt it to the rapidly-changing world of higher education.

However, executing a project of this scope presented its own challenges. The presenters will share key insights and strategies that allowed them to adopt this software and successfully implement integrated planning, including:

  • How to address common campus concerns (too much work, no observable outcomes, more administrative intrusion, etc.)
  • How to nurture relationships that build initial support
  • Behind the scenes logistical support, including workshops, online tutorials, and level of support provided by the software manufacturer.

Following that, a demonstration of the software and discussion with the presenters will:

  • Demonstrate how the university's mission statement receives direct support through the strategic and operational goals established
  • Illustrate the applicability of the process to budget allocations and resource decisions
  • Highlight the interactions that have developed in support of long-range facilities planning
  • Reveal lessons learned in the process, as well as opportunities ahead for further implementation and application.
Learning Outcomes
  1. Evaluate campus planning structure regarding its capability for integration of planning functions.
  2. Design an audit that identifies deficiencies in current planning cycles.
  3. Identify the necessary components needed for integrated planning.
  4. Develop an action plan towards an integrated planning environment.
