The transformation of the Curtis Pool building into Studzinski Recital Hall preserved and brought new life to an important campus landmark. It also helps preserve the college’s extraordinary collection of McKim, Mead and White buildings.

Bowdoin was determined to create a new space for music in the heart of campus, and found a re-use of the building that capitalized on its solid masonry walls (ideal for acoustics) and open span (no columns) rather than constructing a new building on the campus periphery.

The architect designed the building to meet the unique needs of student performers, recognizing the important role of music and the arts to a liberal arts education.

Music professor Mary Hunter says that "having a beautiful place, dedicated to performance, tells students visibly that we are serious about music."

Located at the heart of campus, the new recital hall brings the campus together and welcomes the surrounding community to this place of gathering and celebration. The hall is a warm, inviting space with natural birch woodwork and an abundance of natural light.

Committed to sustainability, the college recycled much of what was removed during renovation including 30 tons of steel and other metals and 165 tons of concrete block.

"The interior transformation from Curtis Pool to a recital hall, which involved a total "gut" of the interior structure, coupled with faithful restoration of the building exterior is a testament to Bowdoin’s commitment to preservation and conservation," says Scott W. Hood, Bowdoin Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs.

Jury Quote: "This project is a great response to a challenging restoration problem. The buildings were allowed to change and take on new programs in this attractive, simple solution."
