SCUP Founder's (Casey) Award—
Recognizing exceptional achievement in higher education planning

Patrick O'MearaThe recipient of the 2005 Founder's (Casey) Award is Patrick O'Meara. He has been serving as dean for International Programs at Indiana University in Bloomington since 1993 and is also professor of political science and professor in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs. Prior to that, he served for many years as director of the African Studies Program. O'Meara and his International Programs staff have strived to integrate global approaches to teaching and research as well as assist planning for higher education in the most challenging locations around the world. He has published numerous books and textbooks about politics in the African continent and has provided interviews on southern Africa and South Africa to many national television programs. He also has testified before the House Foreign Relations Committee on African Affairs and the House Committee on Postsecondary Education. He served as project director for "Living Africa: A Village Experience," a film on life in a Sengalese village, which was funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. He has most recently edited two books: Globalization and the Challenges of a New Century (2000) and Changing Perspectives on International Education (2001). He has published lead articles and country studies for the Americana Encyclopedia and appears in Who's Who in America as well as in Men of Achievement and in Community Leaders in America. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the Cross of Saint George, awarded in Spain; the Warsaw University Medal, the Amicus Poloniae, from the Embassy of Poland; an honorary doctorate from the National Institute for Public Administration in Thailand, and, from Indiana University: the Thomas Hart Benton Medal, the John W. Ryan Award, and the Distinguished Service Award.
