2002 Founders (Casey) Award Honoree
Harlan D. Bareither
The winner of this year's Founder's (Casey) Award is Harlan D. Bareither who has contributed over 45 years to planning in higher education. From 1957 to 1981 he directed the University of Illinois office responsible for space use and space programming ending as Senior Associate Vice President for Administration. He continues to do consulting for the University. Mr. Bareither is best known as the co-author of "University Space Planning" along with J.L. Schillinger (published in 1968), which became one of the main how-to books about space guideline analysis for higher education. He has also served as a consultant to architects, universities and state systems. He has presented numerous papers on the subject of space programming and space utilization, co-authored two additional books, and contributed chapters to two other books on planning for higher education. He holds a B.S. and an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois. He has been a professor of Mechanical Engineering for the University of Illinois since 1960 and joined the Illinois faculty in 1947. Throughout that time he has served on various committees for facilities and space planning for higher education. His national committee memberships included the working group to revise the Higher Education Facilities Inventory and Classification Manual.
