Enjoy the respite from the hustle and the bustle of the outside world as you see the five traditional gardens, an authentic Japanese teahouse and a Pavilion that is combined to recapture the mood of ancient Japan. This tour will feature two of the regions prominent liberal arts schools. In addition to seeing how different academic missions are translated into physical form, this tour will provide an opportunity to learn how each institution has navigated the city-wide institutional development guidelines that govern land use, transportation planning, neighborhood involvement and in-situ expansion. Through a compare and contrast series of on-site examples, this tour will focus on how each institution has resolved its unique site development opportunities and constraints, addressed traditional town-gown relationships, and responded to the City of Portland's stringent land use and transportation requirements for institutions.

Mt. St. Helens Tour
Make a visit to our sister State of Washington to see the monumental devastation left by the eruption on May 18, 1980. This powerful explosion sent pulverized rock and ash almost 14 miles into the atmosphere. The force of the blast flattened trees and destroyed nearly everything in its path. Come now and witness the rebirth that has occurred since that Sunday morning. Stops at Silver Lake Visitors Center, Forest Learning Center and Johnston Ridge.

From Mountaintop to Riverfront: OHSU's Growth From Marquam Hill to South Waterfront

Since the founding of the Marquam Hill Campus in 1914, Oregon Health and Science University has struggled to grow and thrive in an extremely challenging site for a university and major medical center. Through innovative engineering and aggressive transportation management efforts, the university has grown into the largest employer in the City of Portland. Now the university is embarking on an ambitious plan to expand on Portland's South Waterfront with a growing campus connected by streetcar and aerial tram. This tour will cover the history and growth of OHSU, the built environment, and the planning for OHSU's new Schnitzer Campus.

Portland Platinum Tour

Portland is renowned as one of the most progressive cities in the country. With five completed LEED Platinum buildings, and a handful more under construction, the city has established itself as a leader in its commitment to sustainable design. This tour will focus on four prominent LEED Platinum projects located in downtown Portland, including the United Fund Advisors office, Mercy Corp Global Headquarters, the Gerding Theater, and the largest LEED Platinum building in the country, OHSU Center for Health and Healing. Participants will travel by Light Rail and streetcar to each of these projects, starting in Old Town, moving through the Pearl District, and culminating in the South Waterfront district. The tour will end with a discussion and presentation by the Cascadia Chapter of the USGBC focusing on the future of restorative design and development of the Living Building Challenge. At the conclusion of the tour, participants are free to return to the hotel, or enjoy a ride on the aerial tram to OHSU's campus on Marquam Hill.

Columbia Gorge - Historic and Magnificent Beauty
The Columbia River Gorge is a spectacular river canyon cutting the only sea-level route through the Cascade Mountain Range. 80 miles long and up to 4,000 feet deep with the north canyon walls in Washington State and the south canyon walls in Oregon State. Take in the breathtaking view from Crown Point Vista House located on the Historic Scenic Highway high above the Columbia River. This tour passes several waterfalls, including Multnomah Falls with a vertical drop of 620 feet. Observe the unusual rock formations on your way to visit Bonneville Dam, the first federal dam on the Columbia River. Visit the interpretive center and the fish hatchery where you learn of the life cycle of the salmon as well as see an 80-year old Sturgeon fish, descendant of pre-historic eras.

Mt. Angel Abbey and The Gordon House
The Mt. Angel Abbey, a Benedictine monastery and seminary built in 1883 by Swiss Benedictine monks, draws visitors year round to its hilltop location. Its tranquil setting sits high above Mt. Angel on a 300 foot bluff overlooking the Willamette Valley. Views from the bluff include Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams, as well as the lush Willamette Valley farmland. The beautiful library, designed by Alvar Aalto, stores a priceless collection of illuminated manuscripts, and features a display of rare, hand printed books. Next stop is the The Gordon House, the only house Frank Lloyd Wright designed in Oregon. Enjoy a tour that will cover the theories and practices of Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture, the story of how an Oregon farm family commissioned Mr. Wright to design their new home, the near destruction of the home in 2000 and the rescue, dismantling, moving and reconstruction of the house in The Oregon Garden in historic Silverton.

Portland Community College - Community to Neighborhood

Portland Community College's mission has inspired it to find new ways to become a part of the communities that it serves. In addition to its three primary campuses, located north, west and south of Downtown, PCC is experimenting with regional centers in an attempt to bring educational offerings into the neighborhoods. This tour will focus on the planning and execution of this strategy. The tour will begin at the Cascade Campus, the most urban of the three main campuses and recently expanded within its neighborhood. The tour continues at the Southeast Center, the conversion of a “big box” retail site along a strip arterial. The final stop will be the Central Portland Workforce Training Center, adjacent the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry and at the east end of a proposed Light Rail and streetcar crossing of the Willamette River.

Join us as we take an informal tour through Portland's craft brewery history and taste some of the best beer that the region has to offer. The tour begins at BridgePort Brewing Co., recognized as Oregon's oldest craft brewery, and continues with several stops in the burgeoning Pearl District - an ample opportunity to experience the wide variety of lagers and ales available. Tour includes one beer at each stop and a light pizza snack at Henry's Tavern. Participants can choose to stay at Henry's for dinner on their own afterword.

For those of you staying for the weekend after the SCUP Conference, the 22nd annual Oregon Brewer Festival, the nation's largest outdoor craft beer festival, will be held at Tom McCall Waterfront Park in downtown Portland from July 23rd through July 26th.

Evolution of an Educational Partnership: Clark College and Washington State University Vancouver CANCELLED
Clark College, with its main campus in Vancouver's Central Park, was founded 75 years ago as a private two-year college and today serves 13,000, primarily lower division, students. To expand access to higher education in Southwest Washington by addressing student's needs for upper division courses, Clark College hosted the inaugural home of Washington State University Vancouver. In 1992, WSUV established its new home on a beautiful site which features views of both Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens. Enhancing the partnership between the two institutions, Clark College opened its own classroom building on the WSU Vancouver campus in 2006, serving nursing and general education students. With the completion of the Undergraduate Classroom Building in 2009, WSUV now accommodates lower division undergraduates directly, while continuing to welcome transfers from Clark College.

This tour will explore the complex programmatic and physical relationships between Clark College and WSUV, including issues of collaboration, cooperation, competition and identity.

Portland State University and the State of PSU in the City

PSU has been called "The College That Would Not Die". It began by a natural disaster. The 1948, Memorial Day flood destroyed the Vanport campus, forcing relocation to downtown. PSU was envisioned to be unique, not a traditional campus, but an urban commuter campus providing regional education; it's motto, "Let Knowledge Serve the City".
Today, PSU has the highest enrollment among Oregon universities. In 10 years, sponsored research has doubled. Changing expectations have prompted new student housing, retail, and recreational facilities. PSU has become a leader in sustainability and an engine for the regional economy. Through strategic partnerships, PSU is developing the framework and facilities for tomorrows' urban university.
The tour will examine how social and pedagogical changes have influenced campus place making and the development of livable urban communities. It will explore how collaboration and various funding structures have influenced campus development and paved the way for the future.

Fruit and Wine Tour in the Hood River Valley
Take in the breathtaking beauty of the Columbia River Gorge as you make your way to the town of Hood River. Hood River is best known for wind surfing and lush fruit orchards.
