Saturday, July 18, 2009, 1:00 PM–5:00 PM Pacific University-founded in 1849 as a pioneer-era school for orphans-is one of the first chartered higher education institutions in the west with campuses in Forest Grove, Hillsboro, Portland and Eugene. As a small liberal arts school with graduate programs in the health sciences, Pacific University faced the need for growth in order to be sustainable as an institution. Pacific developed a strategic vision and master plan to place the health sciences programs closer to the metropolitan area and in a location which provided for more growth potential and partnerships with healthcare organizations. Saturday, July 18, 2009, 1:00 PM–5:00 PM Portland's reputation for progressive planning is founded on foresight, opportunism and tenacity. This tour will focus on the great planning events in the history of the city, including the creation of the Olmstead designed South Park Blocks, Transit Mall, Waterfront Park (removing a freeway along the water's edge). South Auditorium District (including three seminal parks by Lawrence Halprin) and Director Park, Portland's newest park. The tour will be conducted by Abe Farkas, former Development Director of the Portland Development Commission, Ethan Seltzer, Director of PSU's School of Urban Studies and Planning, and Marcy McInelly, Director of the Halprin Landscape Conservancy, this walking tour includes short presentations at four stops to discuss the planning history and principals.
