Designing the Learning Ecology: Quality Programming for the 21st Century College
Presenter(s): Tom Grier, Winona State University; Robert Krumwiede, University of Minnesota - Duluth
Most college and university planners agree that the built environment has a significant influence on the learning experiences of students and a salutary effect on the intellectual and social lives of faculty and staff. However, planners have rarely been able to give free rein to this aspect of campus design. Institutions that fail to make effective use of the campus ecology will not be competitive in the 21st century. In a market where many competitors have limited capital investment in the built environment, the traditional campus must strive to obtain a ³learning return² on its buildings and equipment. This can be accomplished, by designing a campus ecology where the productivity of all institutional resources is focused on the creation and transmission of knowledge. |
