Future Trends and Directions in the Planning of Academic Resource Centers

Presenter(s): James Baird, Holabird & Root Architects; Allen Lanham, Eastern Illinois University
Convener: Maria I. Wilpon, Helpern Architects

Historically, libraries were known for their large collections of books, supporting individual studies of solitude, containing little technology. Today¹s academic resource centers must follow a completely different model and must stand as an information retrieval source for groups and individuals in an interactive setting, with advanced technologies and unlimited data access. In order to achieve this, current trends must involve the creation of open learning spaces which encourage discussion, electronic networking for current and future technological needs, and specialty spaces for historic and archival materials.

This knowledge resource from SCUP is a concurrent session presented at the Society's thirty-seventh annual, international conference and Expo, SCUP–37, in San Diego, CA (USA), in July of 2002.

Audiocassettes of this and other SCUP–37 sessions are available for purchase here.

Due to our concern for the privacy of members of the face-to-face audiences at SCUP–37, our digital archives of SCUP–37 presentations end at the beginning of the question and answer portion of each session. Whenever we can, we not only provide streaming audio but the slide show or visual presentation used by the presenters, as well.
