Campus Architectural Bloopers 2 - "A Blooper Odyssey"

Presenter(s): Robert R. Murrin and Richard W. Thompson, A C Martin Partners
Convener: Alan C. Freeman, San Jose State University

This lighthearted program continues from last year and encourages you to take yourself a little less seriously. Our failures often teach us the most. How do we get these forgettable, ugly-duckling buildings on our campuses? We all know the ones. We've tried to plant trees but their sins just can't seem to be hidden (especially the high-rise ones). What were we thinking? Will we ever make those same mistakes again? What is it exactly that makes these buildings so unsightly, so unusable, so difficult to change? Notable "bloopers" illustrate their relationship (or lack there of) to the rest of their campus environment, show successes and failures at fixing them, and attempt to define the lessons for campus planning. Blooper examples were collected from a nationwide e-mail solicitation from the SCUP membership.

This knowledge resource from SCUP is a concurrent session presented at the Society's thirty-sixth annual, international conference and Expo, SCUP–36, in Boston, MA (USA), in July of 2001.

Audiocassettes of this and other SCUP–36 sessions are available for purchase here.

Due to our concern for the privacy of members of the face-to-face audiences at SCUP-36, our digital archives of SCUP-36 presentations end at the beginning of the question and answer portion of each session. Whenever we can, we not only provide streaming audio but the slide show or visual presentation used by the presenters, as well.
