Blue Light Special: Transforming a Discount Department Store into a Branch Campus

Presenter(s): Dennis Golladay, Cayuga Community College; Robert J. Joy and Karin Kilgore-Green, Joy, McCoola & Zilch, Architects and Planners, P.C.
Convener: Alan C. Freeman, San Jose State University

Cayuga Community College leased a vacant storefront in a strip shopping center as the new home for its Fulton Extension Center. The session discusses how architects used bold geometry and playful shapes to transform a windowless 50,000-square-foot space into a dynamic environment for student-centered learning. Participants will learn how nontraditional spaces and underutilized community resources can be tapped to meet the needs of growing institutions.

This knowledge resource from SCUP is a concurrent session presented at the Society's thirty-sixth annual, international conference and Expo, SCUP–36, in Boston, MA (USA), in July of 2001.

Audiocassettes of this and other SCUP–36 sessions are available for purchase here.

Due to our concern for the privacy of members of the face-to-face audiences at SCUP-36, our digital archives of SCUP-36 presentations end at the beginning of the question and answer portion of each session. Whenever we can, we not only provide streaming audio but the slide show or visual presentation used by the presenters, as well.
