Enlightened Self Interest: A New Model for Community Renewal

Presenter(s): Eileen Enabnit, City of Dayton; Dick Ferguson, The University of Dayton; Emile LaChance, Jr, CityWide Development Corporation; Paul R. Woodie, Strategic Planning and Urban Development Specialist
Convener: David Helpern, Helpern Architects

Many institutions are impacted by deterioration in adjacent neighborhoods. They have expended money, time, and energy to "protect" students, visitors, and employees from real and perceived issues generated by these neighborhoods. This session will teach ways to redirect those same resources in a holistic, positive approach that can renew a neighborhood. Techniques include partnering with other stakeholders such as residents, businesses, and governments and identifying ways to leverage funds and create learning opportunities for students.

This knowledge resource from SCUP is a concurrent session presented at the Society's thirty-sixth annual, international conference and Expo, SCUP–36, in Boston, MA (USA), in July of 2001.

Audiocassettes of this and other SCUP–36 sessions are available for purchase here.

Due to our concern for the privacy of members of the face-to-face audiences at SCUP-36, our digital archives of SCUP-36 presentations end at the beginning of the question and answer portion of each session. Whenever we can, we not only provide streaming audio but the slide show or visual presentation used by the presenters, as well.
