The SCUP Pacific Regional conference held in 1996 in San Josethe so-called "Capital of High Technology"focused on emerging technologies and suggested dramatic changes were imminent and would alter forever the face of higher education.
Seven years later we ask the question: "Have these changes been realized?" We know technological breakthroughs continue at a staggering pace. Faster microprocessors . . . wireless communication . . . more sophisticated software . . . personal digital appliances . . . . The questions remain, however, "Has higher education reaped benefits from these advances? How are these new technologies being planned for or implemented? How have they impacted methods of instruction? Can institutions afford to invest in new technology? Can they afford not to? How has technology affected academic planning? Has technology influenced building design?"
This conference is about assessing, and even challenging, the impact technology has had on higher education over the last seven years. It's less about the future of technology - that is, what's new in the industry - and more about how technology has (or has not!) shaped Higher Education. Conversely, has Higher Education shaped technology? Has technology adapted to the educational environment? Or are we just making do with what the technocrats give us?
Join us for what we believe will be a spirited conference that will focus on the successes . . . and failures . . . of information technology in Higher Education over the last several years.
