The Campus Facilities Inventory is an outgrowth of suggestions made to the society by John Byrd of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Its development was championed by successive chairs of the society's Professional Development Committee: Nancy Tinker, of Eastern Connecticut State University and Cher Thomas, of the California State University System. The first surveying of institutions for SCUP's Campus Facilities Inventory was in 2003. The initial survey and analysis was managed by Arthur J. Lidsky of Dober, Lidsky, Craig & Associates, with the support of J. Thomas Bowen of the University of Georgia. SCUP anticipates continuing the CFI on an annual basis so that it can continue to grow as a robust resource for planners in higher education.

  1. There were 100 institutional participants in the 2003 CFI survey. They provided data on approximately 354,000,000 net assignable square feet of campus space. The institutions represented all Carnegie Classifications.
  2. In 2004, 189 institutions participated in the SCUP CFI survey. They reported on over 460,000,000 net assignable square feet of campus space. As with the 2003 CFI, all major Carnegie Classifications were represented in the survey results.
  3. In 2005, a SCUP CFI Advisory Group was formed. Its mission is to ensure the quality and responsiveness of data collection and presentation related to the CFI. The members also review the report, data analysis results, and suggest ways to attract additional participants to the survey. Members of the SCUP CFI Advisory Group include: Arthur J. Lidsky (chair), President, Dober, Lidsky, Craig + Associates; Joanne Cate, former Principal Administrative Analyst, University of Californis&md Riverside; Tom Contos, University Architect, Washington and Lee University; Jamie Garrido, Associate Dean/Administrative Services, Chandler-Gilbert Community College; Marge McDermott, Assistant Director, Facilities Planning & Construction, University of Delaware
