Campus Sustainability Day is intended to be a day—at the other end of the calendar from Earth Day—which is devoted specifically to the achievements and challenges of sustainability in higher education institutions and their surrounding communities.
The first Campus Sustainability Day was held later that year in October with a supporting SCUP telecast. In 2004 the main event was a SCUP audiocast and, now, in 2005, the day is becoming an institutionalized, anticipated fall event on college campuses—this year supported by a SCUP webcast.
The mission of Campus Sustainability Day is to highlight the importance of sustainability in all aspects of higher education by creating events that draw participants and the exchange of ideas and knowledge from faculty, staff, and students—and from across all departments, disciplines, and even from across the campus "edge" between town and gown. (The kind of integrated, comprehensive planning that is a major focus for higher education planners among SCUP's constituency, as well as for those who hold campus sustainability positions, whose numbers are increasing.)
