One Campus. Two Institutions. Three Libraries.

Presented by Robin Auchincloss, Alexander Lamis, Samuel G. White

Join us at the nationally landmarked campus of the Bronx Community College of The City University of New York, overlooking the Harlem River in the Bronx, NY. Originally intended in the late 19th century as a suburban campus for New York University, this campus is unique in that it has had three libraries designed and built in the 19th, 20th, and the 21st centuries by leading architects: Gould Memorial Library, a neo-classical gem designed by Stanford White; Meister Hall, a mid-century modern library designed by Marcel Breuer; and North Hall, a thoroughly 21st century library designed by Robert A. M. Stern Architects.

Libraries as repositories of knowledge have evolved over the centuries. Bronx Community College represents a case study of how libraries can (or cannot) adapt to changing times, needs, and function. Each structure is unique. Each tells a different story about form following the then-current function of a library. Each responded to different philosophies of pedagogy. Each served different student populations. Join us as we discuss the merits of each library and how their design exemplifies their evolving mission of making information more accessible over time.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Summarize the academic objectives of each library within its specific context and how well those objectives were met.
  2. Review how the changing requirements of collections, assembly, and service space evolved the built environment within the three libraries.
  3. Identify how each library’s design and operations responded to a different generation of students, and how adaptable those responses were to changing demographics.
  4. Discuss whether libraries can regain their “place” within a campus context, and by what means can they do so.
