Campus Centers for the 21st Century: Creating Stronger Learning Environments
Presenter(s): Kevin P. Duffy, Boston College
The tapestry of American higher education abounds in student unions or campus centers built from the late 1950s through the early 1980s which are now in dire need of major retrofitting or total replacement. This session will focus on current and future trends in campus centers with a particular emphasis on ideas that will not only make them more effective service and community centers but, equally importantly, more comprehensive learning environments. By intentionally connecting the campus center to the overall educational mission of the institution, new opportunities for learning outside the classroom can be created by imaginative design and innovative programming in town squares with the campus center at the hub. |
